Job description

Job Summary
The Assistant Principal will serve as a member of the school leadership team, assisting the Principal in the direction of a "best fit" environment for teenagers with significant barriers to education. The Assistant Principal focuses with the Principal on key school-wide duties including communication, strategic planning, continuous improvement, developing a positive climate and culture, team coordination, enrollment management, liaising with internal teams, and summer/break programming.   • Student and family empowerment through coordination with a robust student services team of coaches, counselors, and more.

Example Duties and Activities
Staffing, and Supervision
  • Holds regular check-ins and provides ongoing observation/feedback/coaching, with emphasis on building the management capacities of other adults. Assists staff in identifying strengths and/or gaps, and develops strategies to optimize strengths and address gaps providing development and/or improvement plans.
  • Assists the staffs' direct reports with restorative conflict resolution between staff or with a parent/student to mitigate escalation.
  • Serves as the driver of talent by monitoring employee retention, forecasting staffing needs, and building/fostering a network of prospects.
  • Facilitates hiring process, including building a network of potential candidates, and creates and implements the onboarding planning for new hires.
  • Identifies and addresses performance and professionalism issues with clear, proactive communication and, when appropriate, support and improvement plans.

Building Team Capacity
  • Assists with strategic planning and continuous improvement efforts by monitoring and evaluating key data metrics. Gathers and submits relevant data as requested.
  • Guides teams in strategic planning: identifies and paces priorities and strategies, delegates tasks as appropriate.
  • Oversees planning and delivery of team capacity building (professional development and coaching). Confirms all staff has regular development opportunities that ensure professional growth.
  • Executes strategy by helping Cabinet members follow-up and ensures corrective action is taking place when progress is not on track.
  • Partners with the principal to revise/update policies and procedures in line with mission and feedback from stakeholders.

Budget, Compliance, and Partnerships
  • Facilitates contractors/volunteers onboarding, including appropriate background checks and signs off on policies/procedures prior to start date.
  • Reviews and signs contracts and MOUs.
  • Monitors compliance to legal protocols and network/school SOPs for specific teams (i.e. graduation audits, special education timelines, discipline protocols).
  • Ensures formal evaluations are completed for relevant staff.
  • Identifies legal/ethical issues, consults with SOPS and/or principal, and documents and monitors response.
  • Makes requests for budget and monitors spending for teams, creates budget requests, delegates spending responsibilities to relevant staff.
  • Participates in monitoring process with grants team and Manager of Operations.
  • Builds capacity through cultivating and maintaining external partnerships.

Required Competencies
  • Degree and Credential Requirements - Bachelor's degree in a relevant field, such as secondary education.
  • Proven Leadership - Leads, develops, and gets results for a team, department, and organization through qualities of integrity, accountability, empathy, humility, resilience, vision, influence, and positivity, ideally in a school leadership role managing professionals.
  • Technical Knowledge - Has working knowledge of G Suite and MS Office.
  • Organizational Aptitude - Plans and attends to details and pursues quality in accomplishing multiple tasks in an organized and timely fashion. Exhibits careful attention to detail and follow-through.
  • Informed Decision-Making - Identifies and comprehends issues, problems, and opportunities; compares data from different sources to draw conclusions; uses effective approaches for choosing a course of action or developing appropriate solutions; takes action that is consistent with available facts, constraints, and probable consequences.
  • Information Monitoring/Reporting/Design - Creates, collects, reviews, and maintains information to manage or improve the achievement of learning goals.
  • Instructional Coaching - Provides timely guidance and effective feedback to help teachers strengthen specific knowledge/skill areas needed to accomplish a task, solve problems, or reach goals within their role.

Preferred Competencies
  • Licensure - Possesses current Indiana Secondary Administrator's License and/or a Special Education Teaching License.
  • Diversity Awareness - Works with diverse populations including people who have experienced barriers to their education.
  • Industry Standards - Displays a working knowledge of the Indiana Academic Standards, Common Core State Standards, and 21st Century Skills and knowledge of disciplinary literacy.
