DESCRIPTION

The Assistant Librarian provides support for library services including acquisitions, serials, archives, research and information literacy instruction under the guidance of the Head Librarian. This position also provides support to key access services activities such as circulation, interlibrary loan, cataloguing and course reserves. Other duties include helping students, staff or faculty with general library services, assisting in the oversight of student library employees, and performing other tasks to support library operations such as outreach. 


POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES/FUNCTIONS

  • Participate in internal meetings to coordinate goals and objectives with faculty and staff of the organization. 
  • Attend conferences, workshops, seminars, and classes to maintain knowledge of changing technologies and developments in the Library field. 
  • Represent the Library or Student Affairs at internal and external meetings and functions. 
  • Provide research help and access to the Dunwoody Archives (photos, newsletters, misc. documentation, history materials, etc.) at the direction of the Head Librarian 
  • Assist day-to-day operations under supervision of the Head Librarian 
  • Process print and/or electronic resource additions to ensure their availability to users. 
  • Catalog or index resources in accordance with national and international standards. 
  • Research activities related to new and updated curriculum development; recommendation of materials to support faculty and students. 
  • Act as liaison between faculty and support departments so that library acquisitions continue to support student learning, curriculum, faculty, and professional development. 
  • Weed (recycle/ discard) materials and equipment, as needed. 
  • Maintain shelf list and OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog) on MNPALS. 
  • Research reference questions from faculty, staff, students and other patrons. 
  • Maintenance of “on-reserve” materials, special collections, and storage issues. 
  • Tally and report circulation and equipment usage statistics.

  • Ability to work 40 hours per week. 
  • Excellent computer skills including knowledge of Microsoft Office: Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access. 
  • Ability to learn new computer programs and database management systems and demonstrate proficiency given adequate training. 
  • Ability to analyze and interpret data. 
  • Ability to think critically and strategically to develop new strategies and goals. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills including ability to communicate effectively with students, faculty, staff, potential employers and other external constituents.

Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. 
  • To perform the job successfully, must have adequate knowledge of and willingness to use specialized software such as PowerCAMPUS, Adobe Products, ALMA/PRIMO, Canvas, ticketing systems and/or other databases/electronic aids, in order to be as self-sufficient as possible in day-to-day operations.  Use and maintain shared network folders to greatly limit reliance on personally stored items and documents. 
  • While performing the duties of this job, an individual is regularly required to use hands to feel or handle/manipulate objects.  Frequently required to sit, lift or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move 25-50 pounds.   Must possess good vision and depth perception. Individual is occasionally required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel crouch, or crawl.  Must be able to climb stairs, set up/tear down displays, etc. Work is frequently performed inside, with occasional outdoor duties.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master’s degree in Library Science or relevant experience working in libraries/educational settings 
  • Experience in customer service or working with students 
  • Experience with cataloging  
  • Candidate must have excellent communication and presentation skills. 
  • Proficient in the use of personal computers, including MS Office and MS Project.
