Situated in Downtown’s Second Street District, Austin Proper Hotel and Residences is the newest luxury lifestyle hotel in Austin, just steps from Lady Bird Lake, the legendary Austin City Limits music venue and nearby boutiques. With inspiring interiors by Kelly Wearstler and culinary offerings in collaboration with McGuire Moorman Hospitality, Austin Proper offers 238 rooms and suites, a dedicated spa and fitness center, and 9,500 square feet of meeting and event spaces, including a rooftop pool deck offering small-batch tequilas and majestic lake views.  Job Overview

The Assistant Human Resources Director acts as the client-facing partner to the management and colleague population of the hotel operation and support departments. This role provides expertise and direct support in the areas of colleague relations, performance management, and organizational development. 

The Assistant Human Resources Director will be the primary point of contact to the assigned internal client base for assistance with Human Resources policies, procedures and programs. This position will report directly to Executive Committee member Director of Human Resources.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Partner with departments to communicate Human Resources policies, procedures, programs and laws.
  • Strategize and collaborate with HR team members to support the needs of the assigned line of business. Proactively identify areas to enhance the operation.
  • Assist with the development of department goals, objectives, and systems.
  • Identify and effectively handle employee relations issues and organizational development issues.
  • Conduct internal investigations, respond to colleague complaints in collaboration with site management, and provide a resolution plan to address employee complaints/concerns.
  • Determine and recommend employee relations practices necessary to establish a positive employer-colleague relationship and promote a high level of colleague morale and motivation. 
  • Assist with the development and implementation, and provide ongoing support, for performance management processes for assigned departments
  • Review the recommendations from management, assist and monitor the implementation of performance improvement plans and other corrective actions for under-performing colleagues.
  • Build and maintain knowledge of current HR related laws and practices, as well as internal policies/procedures, and provide suitable interpretation to management and colleagues.
  • Assist with HR-related education/training, communication, and awareness efforts. Support implementation and training for new HR programs, policies, and initiatives. 
  • Monitor onboarding and orientation process while taking a leading role in welcoming new hires.
  • Provide assistance and back-up to other support teams as needed, including safety, security, payroll, talent acquisition, and L&D.
  • Cultivate a culture that emphasizes responsiveness, innovation, diversity and excellence.
  • Compile and submit reports from various database systems
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Education and Qualifications

  • Bilingual (Spanish) Required
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources Management, Business Management, or related field 
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of Human Resources Generalist experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of (3) years of experience working directly with colleagues and supervisors during investigations, providing recommendations, and problem-solving around employee issues.
  • Full-scope HR Generalist experience. This position has a heavy emphasis in Colleague Relations activities. 
  • Proven ability to build and maintain partnerships and solid working relationships with management and employees at all levels.
  • Action-oriented, with ability to operate successfully in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, handle adversity and frequent change, and balance workload and competing priorities.
  • Ability to work independently, without daily direction.
  • Ability to react to change quickly and effectively and manage additional essential tasks as assigned.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills, and ability to make formal presentations in front of large audiences as necessary. 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook. Ability to learn and navigate a Human Resource Information System.
  • Ability to turn programmatic and operational concepts into employee training programs and facilitate training to diverse audiences.
  • Customer-service focus, and strong influencing skills. 
  • Experience in administering Human Resources policies, programs, and practices, including planning, organizing, developing, implementing, coordinating.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Occasional night and weekend work may be required.
