About the Department:

The Office of Student Success and Retention (SSR) is dedicated to helping SMU undergraduates achieve success. Our office utilizes a mix of one-on-one student meetings, program and outreach development, and collaboration with campus offices to achieve our goal of ensuring Student Success from first day through graduation.

About the Position:

This role is an on-campus, in-person position.

The Case Manager position involves identifying and supporting students who have either taken a leave of absence, exceeded their expected graduation term, or dropped out of the university without documentation.

The Case Manager will engage with these and other high-level students through personalized campaigns, offer concierge support for complex situations, and monitor their academic progress. They will work with the students regularly to develop action plans, facilitate referrals to on-and off-campus resources to help them complete their degree.

In addition to this, the Case Manager will develop and lead programs, trainings, and workshops for reengaged students that support their holistic student development and success. 

The position will report directly to the Director of the Office of Student Success and Retention.

Essential Functions:

  • The Case Manager will facilitate the development of personalized plans for these students and coordinate meetings to ensure that they are meeting their goals. Conduct an initial intake with the students to assess their needs and refer them to appropriate resources. Hold regular meetings during the first term of reengagement for students. Maintain accurate records of all students in the case load.

  • Facilitate the development of Student Success teams to discuss and identify eligible students. Develop & lead engagement campaigns. Collaborate with academic advisors, faculty, & other support services to ensure a coordinated approach to Student Success. Convene Student Success teams to support student issues. Provide academic counseling & problem-solving for enrolled students referred to office.

  • The Case Manager assists students in utilizing college services and benefits by monitoring their individual progress and tracking their cases to ensure compliance with recommendations. They will also be responsible for addressing any new or emerging concerns as they arise. Lead evidence-based training and assessment programs that address contemporary concerns in the college population. 

  • Serve on University committees. Review materials sent from various offices (e.g., advising, general education) and other campus areas in order to provide accurate and updated information to students. Regular collaboration with campus partners to discuss student and policy concerns. Identify common barriers or challenges to Director in order to determine appropriate interventions.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned within Student Success and Retention and/or Undergraduate Education and Academic Success

Education and Experience:

Master's degree is required, preferably in Higher Education, Social Work, Student Affairs, Counseling or related area. 

A minimum of three years of experience is required. Required experience may be in counseling, advising, or Student Success-related areas in a higher education setting (4 year or 2 year).

Experience in meeting the academic support needs of a diverse population of students, including first generation, low-income, transfer, or any other underrepresented group of students is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Candidate must demonstrate strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate with students and campus partners to set and accomplish goals. Must also have the ability to establish and maintain working relationships with a wide range of constituencies is essential.

Candidate must have strong written communication skills. Must also have a strong customer service orientation and strong listening skills. 

Candidate must possess strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and analyze problems, as well as devise solutions. Must also have strong organizational, planning, and time management skills. A strong focus on attention to detail and the ability to utilize data to inform decision are essential. 

Knowledge of mental health and basic needs services for college students preferred. Experience with or a knowledge of advertising and marketing methods and techniques desired. Familiarity with factors that drive retention is a plus.

Candidate must have a strong working knowledge of MS Office. Experience with and/or knowledge of enrollment software (e.g. PeopleSoft) is also required. Experience with and/or knowledge of data software tools preferred.
