We have a position opening for an Assistant Fire Chief/Fire Marshal!
The Assistant Fire Chief serves as the second-in-command in the Fire Department. The Assistant Fire Chief aids the Fire Chief in providing leadership to Fire Department staff and helps the Fire Chief define, establish and attain the overall goals and objectives of the Fire Department. The Assistant Fire Chief is responsible for recommending hiring and for supervising Fire Department staff, and is responsible for the management of assigned functions through the chain of command. The Assistant Fire Chief is responsible for helping the Fire Chief in delivering quality fire prevention, fire suppression, inspections, public education, hazardous materials incident mitigation, rescue and emergency medical services to its citizens and is responsible for helping to assure compliance with all legislative, judicial and administrative policy and procedures. The Assistant Fire Chief also serves as the City’s Fire Marshal.
- Responds to fire alarms and other emergency calls to extinguish or control fires.
- Performs varying forms of administration, management and supervision of full-time staff and paid-on-call firefighters. Is responsible for orientating and training all Fire Department personnel in regards to City and Department policies and procedures. Policies and procedures are clearly communicated to all personnel
- Responsible for delegating work assignments to other fire personnel, as appropriate, to meet the goals and objectives of the Department.
- The Assistant Fire Chief is responsible for assisting the Fire Chief with managing department goals, objectives, and procedures. This is accomplished by working with the Training Committee to ensure that all personnel are trained to perform the tasks necessary to carry out the Department’s goals and objectives.
- Responsible for maintaining investigation/activity records as required by State and/or Federal Agencies.
- The Assistant Fire Chief is responsible for ensuring the safety of all personnel by enforcing safety related policies and procedures.
- Responsible for directing Fire Department operations at major fires with the Chief or in the absence of the Chief.
- In the absence of the Fire chief, the Assistant Fire Chief represents the St. Anthony Fire Department to other City departments, elected officials, general public, and/or outside agencies/organizations. Attends public meetings to define activities and functions of the Fire Department and provides background and informational data in written and oral form to the City Council and City Manager on policy, safety, and emergency management. This position is also responsive to citizen concerns by responding to phone calls, e-mails, and other means of communication in a timely manner.
- Responsible for coordinating with various agencies to acquire the necessary resources to deal effectively with any fire response situation, emergency or disaster.
- Assists the Fire Chief with maintaining the City’s Emergency Operations Plan by ensuring that all sections are in compliance with state and federal regulations.
- Maintain and comply with mutual aid contracts with neighboring fire departments.
- Ensure that all Fire Department apparatus and equipment is in a safe and operable condition.
- Assists the Fire Chief with preparing preliminary budgetary requests and estimated costs.
- The Assistant Fire Chief also serves as the City’s Fire Marshall and is responsible for developing and maintaining the inspection program for new and existing industrial, commercial and R-4 multiple family properties. Develop and maintain fire suppression pre-plans for industrial, commercial and R-4 properties.
- Is responsible for maintaining fire investigation/activity records as required by State and/or Federal Agencies.
- Performance of any Duties as Directed by the Fire Chief, or as apparent.

Qualifications
Associates Degree in Fire science or a related field • Valid Minnesota Class B driver’s license, or ability to secure one within six months of employment • Minnesota EMT certification • Six years’ experience performing a variety of firefighting functions, including some supervisory/command experience • Received the Minnesota Fire Fighter II Certification Or Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the City may find appropriate and acceptable DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: • Bachelor’s degree in fire science, or related field. • State-certified Emergency Manager • Local Hazard Zone (Blue Card Certified) • NIMS 100, 200, 300, 400, 700, 800 • Live within 20 minutes of the St. Anthony Fire station
