Definition of Classification:
The Assistant Director, Student Financial Services is responsible for processing and compliance as it relates to Return of Title IV (R2T4), Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP), verification and awarding of TIV, state, and institutional funding. Serves as a key member of the Student Financial Services leadership team.
Reporting to the Senior Associate Director, this position provides counseling and guidance to students, parents, faculty and the public regarding Student Financial aid eligibility and payment options.
Occasionally, this position may require flexibility to work evening and weekend hours as well as the ability to travel.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Provides support and leadership for the Student Financial Services Office, with emphasis on compliance with federal financial aid regulations and customer service.
- Packages all returning College of Arts and Sciences undergraduate and graduate students and Graduate School of Theology students.
- Assists families and students by providing comprehensive financial aid and payment options counseling, including terms and conditions of various loan programs and debt management; responds to difficult financial aid inquiries; conducts financial aid presentations to students and families.
- Calculates and ensures timely processing for all R2T4 funds; works with external auditors as requested.
- Processes appeals using professional judgment.
- Performs Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) process in compliance for all students.
- Oversees the verification of financial aid files, ensuring compliance with policies and regulations.
- Oversees financial literacy plan.
- Oversees the certification of Direct Parent PLUS Loans and alternative loans.
- Maintains relationships with lenders and supervises the ELM certification process.
- Supervises the Processing Specialist and Student Financial Services Coordinator for College of Arts and Sciences.
- Supervises student workers and manages budget for student worker hours.
- Reconciles Federal Pell, Cal Grant, and Direct Loan program.
- Maintains and updates the Student Financial Services pages on the University website.
- Makes processing decisions that support the policies and goals of the University.
- Performs other related duties and special projects as assigned.
Other duties and responsibilities may include the following:
- Manages military and veteran student accounts, including: oversight of GI Bill payments and Tuition Assistance, compliance with regulatory requirements, reporting deadlines, debt payment, student communication, invoicing, reconciliation, debts, and collections.
- Acts as a liaison between the Department of Veterans Affairs, University Community and the students, administrators, faculty, and staff.

Experience/Training/Education:
Required
- Bachelor’s Degree.
- One year of experience in student aid, higher education administration or in a related field that requires the interpretation and application of public regulations and policies.
- A valid California Class C CA drivers’ license with a safe driving record is required. Must possess a valid driver’s license with a good driving record. Note: Out-of-state licenses are valid until appointment. A valid California Class “C” driver’s license must be obtained within ten (10) days of appointment (in accordance with CA Vehicle Code 12505c).
Knowledge and Skills:
- Working knowledge of financial aid.
- Experience demonstrating a high level of independent thinking and judgment.
- Ability to understand and interpret federal/state/institutional regulations and laws.
- Communicate effectively and follow instructions, both verbally and in writing.
- Aptitude to learn new and evolving technology and recommend ways to improve position’s efficiency.
- Excellent technical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Ability to operate standard office equipment.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office software including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

Working Conditions:
Standard office setting. Duties performed are primarily in an office environment while sitting at a desk or computer workstation or in meetings. At least minimal environmental controls to assure health and comfort.
Physical Demands:
Incumbents regularly sit for long periods; walk short distances on a regular basis; may travel to various locations to attend meetings and conduct work; use hands and fingers to operate an electronic keyboard or other office machines; reach with hands and arms; stoop or kneel or crouch to file; speak clearly and distinctly to answer telephones and to provide information; see to read fine print and operate computer; hear and understand voices over telephone and in person; and lift, carry and/or move objects weighing up to 20 pounds.

HIRING RANGE: Anticipated hiring range is near or at the minimum of the classification, commensurate with candidate's education, experience, skills, and training. The University of Redlands is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The full salary range for this position is defined as the Full Pay Range. The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position defined as the Hiring Range. Placement within the Hiring Range is determined by internal equity, and relevant qualifications.
BACKGROUND CHECK: Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. PHYSICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL EXAMS: For certain positions typically in Public Safety, Facilities, Athletics and Information Technology Services departments, employment is contingent upon a candidate passing a pre-employment physical exam with the ability to lift in excess of 50 lbs. Public Safety Officers, in addition to a pre-employment physical exam, will also be required to pass a psychological evaluation.
