The Student Support and Advocacy Center (SSAC) is committed to providing an empowering environment for all Mason students to seek support services and explore healthy life choices. The Center offers educational programming, one-on-one consultations, and resources in the areas of Sexual and Interpersonal Violence, financial well-being, basic needs, substance use, and collegiate recovery. Staff also assist students encountering barriers to personal success. About the Position:
The Assistant Director for Sexual andInterpersonal Violence Response and Prevention (SIVPR) reports to the Associate Director of SSAC. The Assistant Director primarily supports student survivors of Sexual and Interpersonal Violence via direct assistance and connection to university and local resources. The Assistant Director assists in facilitating primary and secondary prevention including workshops, bystander intervention training, and peer education. The Assistant Director is a professional who is committed to fostering the holistic growth of students while striving to maintain the well-being and safety of the University community.
Responsibilities:
Direct Survivor Support:
- Conduct intake and screenings with student survivors of sexual assault, sexual harassment, Interpersonal Violence, and stalking;
- Provide case management of student survivors and occasionally students in distress;
- Provide compassionate navigation of campus and community resources to student survivors;
- Accompany student survivors to meetings with Title IX and George Mason University Police Department as requested by the student;
- Support student survivors in developing options for maintaining safety and/or action plans in the event of an escalation of violence;
- Ensure that student records are maintained in accordance with University policies and applicable laws and are readily available to internal staff; maintain confidentiality of student records in accordance with University policy, local, state, and federal laws; and
- Cultivate an understanding of campus approaches to supporting survivors and Prevention efforts, including best practices and innovations.
Prevention:
- Coordinate the George Mason University Bystander Intervention program;
- Oversee the Relationship Peer Leaders program, including recruitment, training, workshop development, evaluation, and overall management;
- Assist in the creation and delivery of workshops and other prevention programs on Sexual and Interpersonal Violence, consent, bystander intervention, healthy relationships, boundaries, healing practices, and related topics;
- Provide information, resources, and presentations to the Mason community on supporting survivors; and
- Develop resources and materials, as needed, that focus on student survivor experiences and needs.
Collaboration with Mason and Community Entities:
- Identify, develop, and maintain strong working relationships with relevant University and community agencies. Assist in the development of resources and support options for student survivors within and outside of the University;
- Provide support and consultation to SSAC staff and other Mason community members on topics relevant to the area of responsibility, including case management, content expertise, and trauma-informed practices;
- As requested by the Director or Associate Director, serve on and participate in committees related to Sexual and Interpersonal Violence prevention and response; and
- Assist the Director and Associate Director with special projects related to the field of Sexual and Interpersonal Violence and other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in related field or equivalent combination of education and experience;
- Related experience typically obtained in one or more years of progressive full-time work;
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills;
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills;
- Ability to build and maintain successful collaborative relationships in a diverse campus community;
- Ability to work in a high-paced environment with frequent interruptions;
- Ability to be accurate in the performance of duties and attention to detail;
- Ability to maintain and manage confidential information; and
- Ability to operate various software programs, including Guardian software and Microsoft Office products.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Progressive experience typically obtained in one or more years in a university setting within student affairs or equivalent;
- Previous work experience with direct support of survivors of Sexual and Interpersonal Violence, including safety planning and screening for lethality;
- Previous experience developing and delivering educational programs, prevention efforts, and trainings;
- Assessment experience;
- Knowledge of current national research and trends about college survivors of Sexual and Interpersonal Violence;
- Knowledge about the development and delivery of education programs, prevention efforts, and trainings; and
- Ability to effectively engage with committees, student groups, administration, and community agencies.
