About the Department:

The Center for Adaptive Systems of Brain Body Interactions (CASBBI) was chartered in 2018 by the Office of the Provost as part of a university-level initiative for establishing Transdisciplinary Centers of Advanced Study. The vision for CASBBI is to explore new ways to enable all people to fully participate in needed and desired life roles and activities. CASBBI researchers focus on transdisciplinary research questions of major public health and societal significance such as chronic pain, substance misuse and addiction, autism spectrum disorders, and mobility impairments. Recognizing that disability is characterized by dysfunction in multiple inter-related systems across physical biological and psychosocial domains, CASBBI brings together experts in neuroscience, physics, engineering, psychology and rehabilitation to create translational innovations.

CASBBI faculty currently have over $17 million of active federally-funded research grants that has nearly doubled since the center’s inception. The core methodological expertise is in multiscale neuromodulation and neuroimaging, human machine interactions, and sensorimotor integration and human movement. The core facilities include shared research instrumentation, core imaging facilities, shared wet and dry lab facilities on the Fairfax campus of George Mason University. Many CASBBI researchers have state-of-the-art laboratory space in the Peterson Health Sciences Building.

In addition to research, CASBBI operates a graduate training program that brings graduate students from multiple disciplines to work closely together with community partners. Trainees gain interdisciplinary skills in data science, sensing, and imaging; and engage in participatory design with community stakeholders to create data-driven solutions that enable individuals to participate fully in needed and desired life roles and activities.

About the Position:

This position is a key member of the leadership team of a vibrant and thriving community of faculty, trainees and external stakeholders that are engaged in transdisciplinary research and scholarship programs, with many opportunities to be directly involved in research and scholarship activities at the Center. This position also plays a major role in continuing to develop the overall vision of transdisciplinary research and scholarship at the Center for Adaptive Systems of Brain Body Interactions (CASBBI), and substantially growing the base of research and philanthropic support to take the center to the next tier.

Responsibilities:

  • Develops consortia with external (local, national and international) organizations around shared research goals; and
  • Develops meaningful communication pathways between disability stakeholder groups, including end users, healthcare professionals, policy professionals, and academic researchers.

Research Project Management:

  • Supports ongoing research projects, including developing research protocols and clinical study protocols in collaboration with CASBBI faculty;
  • Leads participatory research projects;
  • Develops manuscripts and other research products; and
  • Presents research results at national and international conferences.

Mentoring and Outreach:

  • Develops STEM outreach activities to increase representation of persons with disabilities in STEM research and education.

Required Qualifications:

  • Terminal degree in a related field;
