ON-CALL TUTOR
HIGHLY QUALIFIED STATUS (HQ): Individual selected into this position must be Highly Qualified for this assignment. Applicants must possess a high school diploma or its recognized equivalent, and have completed the following requirements: Completed at least 48 semester hours of credit at an accredited college or university; or, obtained an associate's degree or higher degree from an accredited college or university; or, passed the ParaPro Assessment prepared and administered by Educational Testing Services (ETS) with a score of at least 460.
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION
Under the supervision of a teacher, the High School Tutor will provide academic support to high school students by fostering a positive learning environment and helping students achieve their academic goals. This position requires strong subject knowledge in Math, Science, and/or English Language Arts.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The primary responsibility of a High School Tutor is to provide individual and/or group tutoring to students in Math, Science, or English Language Arts (ELA) based on the Tutor's personal area of expertise and college courses taken. Tutors will assist students during after-school tutoring sessions by explaining, clarifying, reviewing, or reinforcing the concepts taught in students' classes. Tutors will assess student understanding and determine students' needs. Tutors will work closely with the content area teachers in monitoring student learning progress.
Subject-Specific Tutoring:

  • Conduct one-on-one or small group tutoring sessions in specific high school subjects (e.g., mathematics, science, English, and various AP Courses).
  • Tailor lessons to meet individual student needs and learning styles.
  • Clarify concepts, review class materials, and provide additional explanations as needed.

Homework Assistance:
  • Assist students with their homework assignments, ensuring comprehension and completion of tasks.
  • Help students develop effective study habits.
  • Model asking questions.
  • Encourage students to self-advocate and model how to ask teachers for support during the school day.

Test Preparation:
  • Prepare students for exams, quizzes, standardized tests, finals, and AP test questions by reviewing relevant content.
  • Practicing test-taking strategies.
  • Model effective study techniques.

Progress Monitoring:
  • Regularly assess and track students' progress to identify areas of improvement.
  • Communicate with teachers and provide updates on student performance.

Communication and Feedback:
  • Maintain open and effective communication with teachers and coordinators.
  • Provide constructive feedback to students to encourage continuous improvement.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Experience: Any combination of education and experience that could likely provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:
  • Education: Completion of 48 semester or 60 quarter units, from an accredited college or university,
  • Minimum of at least three (3) semesters in the subject areas of Math, English, and Science. Strong knowledge of high school-level, college, or AP subjects.
  • Experience: Previous tutoring or teaching experience preferred.

OTHER JOB REQUIREMENTS

Salary
$20 per hour (Social Security Deduction)
This position is non-PERS compensable.
Salaries are subject to adjustment and may increase and decrease each fiscal year.
Additional Job Information
Applications are taken on an on-going basis. As positions become available, applications will be reviewed by administrators and interviews/hiring will take place. On-Call and Temporary positions do not qualify for benefits. Part-time WCSD employees may be considered for the On-Call Tutor not to exceed 20 hours per week.

New employees will be fingerprinted upon hire and every five years thereafter and will have $58.50 deducted from their first paycheck to help defray the cost of fingerprinting. Non-licensed employees will have $58.50 deduction when their fingerprints are completed every five years. Fingerprint fees are subject to change.
Temporary employees working less than 6 months do not receive benefits.
