Job Description
We are seeking an Assistant Controller to join the team! In this role, you will be responsible for activities associated with maintaining ledger accounts, developing financial statements and reports planning; studying, and collecting data to determine costs of business activity such as raw material purchases, inventory and labor using Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
This position is Full-time and requires you to be onsite daily in Carbondale, IL (Southern Illinois) about 90 minutes from St. Louis. Relocation assistance provided!
Responsibilities:
- Maintains the integrity of the data captured in the general ledger and establishes and enforces appropriate controls, including company standard operating procedures and Sarbanes Oxley requirements.
- Produces financial statement packages in accordance with monthly, quarterly, and annual schedules, including a performance evaluation across sales, COGS, SG&A, etc.
- Oversees accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll transactions
- Facilitates internal and external audits, supports tax requirements, coordinates the annual physical inventory, maintains fixed assets, reviews multi-year contracts, and verifies the accuracy of all balance sheet accounts.
- Evaluates and advises on the impact of long-range plans, introduction of new programs/strategies and regulatory action, including new product development, pricing, and potential acquisitions.
- Assists in creation of monthly commentary and schedules for month-end close, forecasts, and budget submissions.
- Strong continuous improvement skills required, including instructing, and empowering the accounting team to implement Lean principles to department processes.
- Assists Controller with the annual budget process, from gathering of inputs and assumptions to the company deliverables. Fosters a continual improvement of the budgeting process through education of department managers on financial issues impacting their budgets.
- Distribute and ensure adherence to reporting deadlines by the business units and work closely with the accounting team to resolve any outstanding questions or items.
- Supports cross-functional initiatives across Sales & Marketing, Operations, Supply Chain, and Human Resources by assisting with capital expenditure approval requests, innovation support, make vs. buy decisions, product pricing, customer profitability analyses, and cost containment decisions.
Qualifications
- Strong leadership skills and financial acumen.
- Effective interpersonal skills, written and oral presentation skills, collaborative problem-solving skills, and project management skills are essential.
- Manage the accounting staff to oversee transactional processing, reconciliations, and journal entry preparation. Responsible for building and organizing a high-performing finance team. Responsibilities include interviewing and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
- Bachelor's Degree in Accounting/Finance
- 5-7 years of relevant experience is required including consistent progression in responsibilities - a master’s degree and/or CPA/CMA certification is a plus; supervisory experience and knowledge of GAAP, internal controls, cost accounting in a manufacturing environment, and inner-workings of ERP systems
- Proficient in Excel and comfortable using a variety of software packages and platforms to accumulate, manipulate, and analyze data.
