The Role

 

Supervises Light Rail Controllers in the action of controlling the movement of rail vehicles.  Performs administrative functions; including developing reports, operating plans, and statistical analysis for MetroLink Operations.  Reports to the Superintendent of Light Rail Operations – Operations Control. 

Responsibilities

  • Supervise Light Rail Controllers in OCC.
  • Serve as the on duty Lead Light Rail Controller as defined in Operations procedures and rules.
  • Serve as the OCC liaison to Security, Bus Operations, Customer Service, Communications, LRV Maintenance, and MOW during service disruptions.
  • Provide support to Light Rail Controllers by relieving them of some of their administrative duties and other tasks to allow them to remain focused on safety critical functions.
  • Develop operating plans, Light Rail Controller guidelines and instructions, reports, service plan communications, track allocation, statistical analysis, and other similar Operations documents.
  • Develop Light Rail Controller weekly work assignments and maintain vacation schedule.
  • Investigate and report on MetroLink Operations incidents and accidents.
  • Occasionally works as a Light Rail Controller covering shift vacancies.
  • Assist and coordinate the training of current and new Light Rail Controllers.
  • Develop and implement procedures and schedules to regulate the activities of light rail vehicle operators; assist in the developing and implementing performance standards for light rail operators and evaluate employee productivity and performance against established standards.
  • Assist in the preparation of safety procedures, rules and regulations for light rail operations; participate in emergency situations involving vehicles, equipment and passengers; notify appropriate persons in the event of emergency.
  • Controls all signals, switches and train movement (via SCADA) within any given interlocking along the alignment.
  • Monitor all alarms and indications from Remote Terminal Unit’s Substations, Signal Houses.
  • Monitor stations, platforms, elevators/escalators, emergency telephones and ticket vending machines and report any defects.  Respond to emergency alarms.
  • Ensure that the agency’s safety procedures, policies and rules are followed by all employees, contractors and visitors that transcend the right-of-way. 
  • Provide troubleshooting techniques to assist train operators
  • Report delays and problems promptly and take appropriate actions to correct performance and maintain established schedules.
  • Enter daily rail activities into various data bases, logs and rail operations management information systems.
  • Assist passengers and ensure that safe, efficient and courteous rail service is provided.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Extensive experience and highly skilled as a Light Rail Controller or similar position.
  • Must be able to qualify as a MetroLink Light Rail Controller. 
  • Ability to manage several different tasks at the same time while directing train movement.
  • Ability to evaluate the work of employees, develop procedures, rules and schedules and instruct employees on operation and safety procedures. 
  • Must demonstrate the abilities to navigate train movement in an SCADA environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and while working under pressure.
  • Must be able to navigate through Microsoft Word, Excel, understand Access as well as general typing skills.

 

Education

Experience

Degree: Bachelor's Degree highly desirable

Years: Minimum of five (5) years, preferably as light rail controller or similar position 

Field: Business or Transportation related

Field: Rail Transit, Supervisory Experience
