The mission of the Department of Population Health and Pathobiology is to recruit, train, inspire, and graduate Doctors of Veterinary Medicine of exemplary knowledge, skill, and character. In order to maintain the intellectual and professional climate necessary to accomplish this mission, the department’s faculty will advance veterinary medical science through innovative basic and applied research, inspired mentoring of students (undergraduate, professional, residents, and graduate), excellence in clinical and diagnostic services, and innovative extension and engagement activities.
North Carolina State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) is a dynamic community whose members are dedicated to preparing veterinarians and veterinarian scientists while advancing animal and human health from the cellular level through entire ecosystems.
The College has gained international recognition on the strength of its teaching, research, engagement, and patient care efforts. Located on 180 acres near downtown Raleigh, the College encompasses 20 buildings on the main Centennial Biomedical Campus. Instruction is in three departments—Clinical Sciences, Molecular Biomedical Sciences, and Population Health & Pathobiology. In addition to the four-year Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree, there are programs leading to master and doctoral degrees in several areas with numerous opportunities for specialization.

Essential Job Duties:

This clinical track beef production specialist (Clinical Assistant Professor) position requires in-depth knowledge and experience in the delivery of Ruminant medicine and production management, with an emphasis on beef cattle. The position will fulfill clinical responsibilities mainly through field service including routine reproductive work with beef and dairy cattle and small ruminants. The successful candidate will provide first opinion medicine, general surgery, and herd management consulting consistent with the college’s emphasis on high quality care and support of producers in North Carolina.
The candidate will be integral in the development of instruction in ruminant management for veterinary students, and a strong interest in teaching is required. Teaching responsibilities will predominantly focus on the training and assessment of fourth year veterinary students, and Ruminant Health interns and residents in the clinical setting. This position also contributes significantly to the teaching of preclinical veterinary students, including participation in didactic courses, labs, and elective classes related to Ruminant Health, reproduction, and herd management.
This position includes a significant extension appointment. The incumbent will be dedicated to extension, primarily focused on the training and education of cow-calf producers in North Carolina. This position is expected to have frequent interaction with livestock producers and the North Carolina cattle industry. Specific extension responsibilities will include: 1) serving as an advisor for the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services beef herds, 2) working to improve the knowledge of beef producers in the State of North Carolina which will include participating in regional education programs and local extension meetings, 3) interfacing with beef producers, county agents and private and public veterinarians to help producers troubleshoot disease problems they might be facing and 4) providing training to Cooperative Extension Agents on Animal Health Management and how to best interact and collaborate with local veterinarians.

Minimum Education and Experience:

Requires doctor of veterinary medicine (or an equivalent degree), with appropriate professional experience

Other Required Qualifications:
  • Must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a demonstrated ability to work with others in a collegial team atmosphere
  • Strong commitment to excellence in teaching
  • The ability to network, develop partnerships and build and maintain relationships with livestock producers and stakeholders in the North Carolina Cattle Industry
  • Familiar with the modern beef cow-calf industry.
  • Ability to lift up to 60 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodations.
  • Experience in teaching, clinical practice, extension
  • A strong interest in teaching veterinary students and clinically relevant beef cattle research
  • Pursue collaborative research with members of the Animal Science and College of Veterinary Medicine faculty.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Board certification or board eligibility (American Board of Veterinary Practitioners, American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine, American College of Theriogenology) and/or an advanced degree
Required License(s) or Certification(s):
  • Eligibility for licensure or faculty certificate to practice veterinary medicine in the State of North Carolina, as well as eligibility for Federal veterinary accreditation.
  • A valid NC driver’s license or the ability to obtain one within 60 days of start date.
