Position and Qualifications

The mission of the Studio Art program is to educate and empower students in the creative process through a breadth of experience in multiple media areas and a depth of experience in the media of their choice. Art Department faculty are dedicated to teaching, creative work, and experiential learning that further Hollins University’s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice.

The position carries a teaching load of six courses during the academic year. Courses to be covered include all levels of Printmaking, as well as beginning drawing. The Visiting Assistant Professor of Printmaking is also encouraged to participate in the life of the department and the university by attending department and faculty meetings, department and university functions (including student art showings and presentations), and faculty development opportunities.

Hollins aims to hire an artist-educator with a broad technical background in printmaking, a commitment to interdisciplinarity, and a strong understanding of the role of print media within contemporary art and culture.

Candidates must have a M.F.A. in printmaking, drawing, visual arts, or a related discipline and a demonstrated history of professional engagement, including exhibition record and/or other productivity. Applicants must also have a demonstrated ability to teach the theoretical and critical aspects of art making, in addition to the technical aspects; commitment and passion for undergraduate teaching for both studio art majors and non-majors; and a desire to participate in a department that emphasizes both the study and practice of art in a liberal arts setting.

Applications are sought from members of underrepresented populations, those who have demonstrated success working with diverse populations, and those with experience in inclusive and equity-minded teaching who are enthusiastic about teaching in an undergraduate, student-centered educational environment.

Preference will be given to candidates with teaching experience at the college level and expertise in maintaining a printmaking studio.
