Job description

Reporting to the Reservation Security Sergeant, the Animal Resource Officer is responsible for providing specialized protection to animals and wildlife on and off the Reservation. The officer prepares appropriate reports and maintains close working partnerships with local law enforcement and animal control agencies.
The officer delivers critical safety and security services in a courteous and professional manner and is involved with the enforcement of laws, rules, and regulations under the Tribal Government, Federal, and State of California codes (where applicable), securing an assigned area, conducting investigations, collecting evidence, and preparing appropriate reports.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
1. Provides for the protection and care of domestic and wildlife animals on the San Manuel Reservation and San Manuel-owned properties. Coordinates with law enforcement agencies, wildlife agencies or rescue groups, Tribal Court, or Criminal Courts to ensure animals and wildlife are managed in accordance with San Manuel Tribal Ordinances, California State Laws, and Federal Laws governing Animal Control or wildlife enforcement.
2. Maintains a safe environment for animals under care including providing daily care and emergency first-aid, as needed. Performs general maintenance of the kennel system and equipment and maintains care and control of authorized equipment, vehicles, and weapons.
3. Conducts physical security evaluations and inspections throughout the reservation. Regularly inspects fencing, lighting, and surveillance systems throughout the Reservation. Secures and locks/unlocks gates and buildings on the Reservation. Assists with troubleshooting and securing gates that malfunction.
4. Conducts snake and dangerous animal sweeps at identified locations. Assists and trains with the Protective Services Team with dignitary protection of Tribal Citizens especially when assignments involve events outside or around potentially dangerous animals or wildlife.
5. Conducts specialized investigations and services for Tribal Citizens as needed and conducts community educational presentations or events to promote goodwill and a positive image of the Tribe and addresses a variety of audiences regarding the function and mission of the Animal Resource Team and wildlife on the reservation.
6. Performs other duties as assigned.
Education/Experience/Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED is required.
  • Associate degree in criminal justice or a related field is preferred.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in civilian animal control, federal wildlife, or as a San Manuel DPS Public Safety Officer is required.
  • Must like animals and wildlife and demonstrate a genuine care for animals.
  • Exceptional customer service and interpersonal skills are required.
  • Strong ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing is required.
  • Experience working with ill or injured animals preferred.
  • Experience conducting investigations preferred.
  • Experience writing post incident reports preferred.
  • Must be willing to work with and be exposed to a variety of animals or wildlife, including those that have been deceased.
  • Must be willing to euthanize a gravely injured animal or deploy lethal force against an aggressive animal to prevent great bodily injury including the preservation of human life.

Certificates/Licenses/Registrations
  • At the discretion of the San Manuel Tribal Gaming Commission, you are required to obtain and maintain a gaming license.
  • Must possess a valid California driver's license with an acceptable driving record as determined by the company's insurance carrier.
  • P.O.S.T., Police Officer Standard Training, Reserve Level II certification is required or any recognized law enforcement agency certificate (local, state, federal, military police, or equivalent). Recognized out-of-state certification and/or related experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

As a condition of employment, candidates must be able to obtain and maintain the following once hired.
  • California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services Gun and Guard Card are required.
  • TASER certificate is required
  • Expandable baton certification is optional.
  • Recognized certification from a Humane Officer Academy or equivalent is required.
  • Euthanasia certification is required.
  • Chemical capture certification is required.
  • Certification in Canine First Aid and AED-related training is required.
  • A valid Veterinary Assistant Controlled Substances Permit through the California Department of Veterinary Medical Board is required.
  • May be required to obtain certification and conduct unmanned aerial vehicle operations to maintain physical security on the Reservation or during specific events.
