Position:Advanced Practice Provider (PA or APRN) – Infectious Disease

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:
Cares and addresses health care issues to patients of all ages. Provides Infectious Diseases care to the patients of Variety Care, following the standards of the Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH), The American Association of Nurse Practitioners or The American Academy of Physician Associates as well as at the direction of the Medical Director and/or Supervising Physician.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. Provides quality, comprehensive, accessible and cost effective patient care through clinical expertise, role modeling, mentoring, consultation, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
  2. Performs clinical decision-making that is professional and based on evidence-based practice.
  3. Practices excellence and technical assistance is promoted through helping relationships among clinical staff and across other disciplines - nurses, support staff and administrative staff.
  4. Follows protocols which provide medical authority when such are indicated in providing care.
  5. Performs physical examinations, screenings and assessments of patients.
  6. Diagnoses and treats patients with infectious diseases including HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis C
  7. Develops treatment plans and monitor patient progress
  8. Educates patients and their families about infectious diseases, prevention, and treatment options
  9. Provides care within their scope of practice as outlined by applicable state law, licensing, regulations, and institutional policy and practice agreements.
  10. Selects orders and/or perform tests and procedures to augment physical findings.
  11. Utilizes appropriate laboratory tests using prescribed methods and techniques; determines normal and abnormal test results; and develops a health care plan based upon analyzed data.
  12. Defines/documents differential diagnoses and lists differential diagnoses with most likely diagnoses included.
  13. Perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures as deemed necessary and appropriate for plan of care, in collaboration with supervising physician.
  14. Interprets data and diagnostic results for appropriate course of action including but not limited to radiology reports, EKG, pathology, etc. in collaboration with supervising physician.
  15. Secures health histories from patients and notates findings and treatment course in patient electronic health chart including follow-up notes.
  16. Under direct and indirect supervision of a physician, diagnoses and implements a comprehensive medical care plan based upon the patient’s health needs.
  17. Provides continuity to an individualized health care program for patients by referring to or collaborating with Variety Care physicians and other members of the health care team.
  18. Provides instruction and counseling to individuals, families and/or groups and respects the patient’s personal desires in support of a caring environment focused on patient’s desired outcomes, healing, and preventive care.
  19. Identifies health care needs within the community and makes recommendations on comprehensive health care for patients.
  20. Assists in planning and providing in-service training as needed.
  21. Participates in organizational and departmental meetings, educational opportunities, committees and workgroups as necessary.
  22. Participates in quality initiative/performance activities.
  23. Promotes interdisciplinary practice and implement strategies to overcome barriers to collaboration.
  24. Follows HIPAA guidelines and Variety Care policy and procedures as it relates to privacy.
  25. Provides Telehealth services from remote locations connected to a reliable internet resource including a provider’s home when necessary.
  26. Supports Variety Care’s accreditation as a Patient Centered Medical Home and our commitment to provide care to all patients that is Safe, Effective, Patient Centered, Timely, Efficient, and Equitable. Provides leadership and works with all staff to achieve the goals of the “Triple Aim” of healthcare reform—to improve the experience of care, improve health outcomes, and decrease healthcare costs.

  28. Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements, Special Skills or Knowledge:
  1. Nurse Practitioner candidates:
    1. Recognition as a Nurse Practitioner by the Oklahoma Board of Nursing Registration and Nursing Education.
    2. Certification by the appropriate national Certified Nurse Practitioner organization.
    3. Three years of experience as a licensed professional RN.
  2. Physician Assistant/Associate candidates:
    1. Completed a Physician Assistant accredited educational program.
    2. Recognition as a Physician Assistant/Associate by the Oklahoma Medical Board.
    3. Certification by the appropriate national Certified Practitioner organization, or be eligible to obtain a license immediately to practice in Oklahoma.
  3. Three year of experiences in Infectious Diseases with HIV/AIDS.
  4. Experience working with the public and co-workers.
  5. Excellent communication skills.
  6. Experience providing good judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions.
  7. Experience maintaining medical records.
  8. Experience working in a multi-fact, fast past environment.
Preferred Requirements, Special Skills or Knowledge:
  1. Bilingual (English/Spanish).
  2. AAHIVM certification as HIV Specialist.
Essential Functions:
  1. Able to lift at least 25 pounds
  2. Able to assist patients on to and off of exam table when asked or directed.
