The Academic Advisor and Recruiter position in the Department of Special Education will primarily serve students in off-campus or online initial teacher licensure programs in the Department of Special Education. The person in this role will primarily ensure a smooth transition from pre-admission to matriculation for students in the Para-Professional Unlocking Licensure in Special Education (PULSE) program. The Academic Advisor and Recruiter will recruit new PULSE students, support them through the transition to enrollment, serve as their academic advisor, and implement strategies to increase their success once enrolled. This position will require extensive collaboration with school districts, faculty and other staff in the department and comprehensive knowledge of Illinois State policies and procedures. May also travel to high schools/community colleges/community agencies for recruitment events.
Additional responsibilities will include advising traditional special education students on course sequences and those students interested in a minor in special education.

Required Qualifications1. Bachelor's Degree
2. Previous experience in one of the following areas: advising, recruiting, success coaching, or student affairs.
3. Knowledge of Teacher Education.
4. Working knowledge of basic office software (word processing, email systems, spreadsheets, databases), and an understanding of student information systems.
5. Ability to effectively communicate with faculty, staff, other department heads, students, employees in other departments, parents, and alumni in a professional manner.
6. Ability to work with diverse populations of students, peers, and the public.
7. Ability to exchange or/deliver information to supervisors and/or managers in other departments, deans, general public/citizens, state or federal elected officials, faculty and /or staff from other universities, and professional/business community
8. Evidence of an understanding of the issues facing today’s college students as it impacts their academic choices.

2. Experience across more than one area: advising, recruiting, success coaching, or working in student affairs.
3. Experience working with adult learners and non-traditional students.
Office setting. The core work hours of this position are 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM Monday through Friday. Position occasionally requires work beyond regular office hours. Position requires some travel.
Functional ExpectationsMust be able to complete the following with or without a reasonable accommodation:
1. Remain at a workstation for extended periods
2. Move about in various locations on and off campus as needed to complete day-to-day work
3. Effectively communicate on a daily basis
