The UHM Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) invites applications for a full-time, general funded, tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level, pending position clearance and availability of funds, to begin approximately on August 1, 2024.
Candidates should have a strong research record in fields applicable to Control or communication, including but not limited to reinforcement learning, data-driven control, online learning for real-time control, networked control, distributed and decentralized control, stochastic optimal control, complex systems, wireless physical layer or satellite communications, network coding, multiaccess communications, differential privacy and federated learning. We are particularly interested in candidates who work on the intersection of control/communications and machine/statistical learning and AI, for example deep reinforcement learning; federated learning; integrated sensing and communication with machine learning/AI; Control or communication aspects of ambient power enabled IoT and similar topics. Candidates with cross disciplinary strengths that include one of the priority areas are particularly encouraged to apply. Exceptional candidates in other areas of electrical and computer engineering are encouraged to apply as well.
These topics fall into priority areas for the University and the State of Hawai'i in general. Successful candidates would have opportunities to collaborate by means of a diverse range of initiatives in the Department and the University. Successful candidates will be expected to be comfortable with teaching a range of courses in systems and data science, such as graduate and undergraduate courses in random processes, probability, linear systems, control, signal processing, communications, machine learning, and similar topics.

The ECE Department offers the B.S. degree in electrical engineering, B.S. degree in computer engineering, and the M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in electrical and computer engineering. Both B.S. degree programs in electrical engineering and computer engineering are ABET accredited. Current enrollment is approximately 300 undergraduate and 60 graduate students with 23 faculty members. Collaboration, funding opportunities, resources, and research exposure may be found through the department's involvement and affiliation with a $3 million NSF Research and Traineeship Award to re-envision graduate education (which includes the call areas as priority areas), a $5 million NSF CyberCorps Scholarship for Service Program (SFS); the NSA/DHS National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Research (CAE-R); the NSF AI Research Institute (focusing on dynamic systems); and the NSF Center for Science of Information (focusing on big data, information theory, and machine learning). Duties and Responsibilities

  • To teach assigned undergraduate and graduate courses, including via various distance delivery modes as required;
  • To develop extramurally funded research programs that result in publications in leading scholarly journals;
  • To present research work in leading scholarly conferences;
  • To serve as chair or member of committees in charge of student candidates for advanced degrees;
  • To participate in curriculum development activities including the development of curricular materials and special instructional methods;
  • To supervise independent study activities;
  • To serve as academic advisor to students;
  • To serve on Department, College, and University committees;
  • To render service to the professional or lay community that is relevant to the individual's academic specialty;
  • Support the recruitment, retention, and graduation of Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islanders, and other underrepresented populations in Engineering;
  • Participate in initiatives towards the creation of place-based/Hawai'i-based curriculum to impact electrical and computer engineering knowledge;
  • Participate in implementing the Native Hawaiian principles from the UHM Strategic Plan;
  • To perform related tasks as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • An earned Ph.D. (All-But-Dissertation, ABD, applicants will be considered; degree must be earned before the date of hire) in Electrical or Computer Engineering or a closely related discipline from a university of recognized standing by the start date of the position;
  • Demonstrated strong commitment to teaching excellence and mentoring at the undergraduate and graduate levels and the ability to teach students from different backgrounds with diverse life experiences and learning styles.
  • Demonstrated scholarly achievement, evidenced by a track record of conducting research and publishing scholarly materials;
  • Demonstrated ability to teach graduate courses in area of specialty, as well as undergraduate courses in electrical and computer engineering;
  • Potential to develop externally funded research programs and research collaborations;
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to engage successfully in a multi-cultural and multi-ethnic environment.

Desirable Qualifications
  • Demonstrated experience in obtaining extramural funding from the federal government or industry;
  • Strong record of research in Control or Communications and in machine learning/AI
  • Demonstrated record of excellence in scholarly achievement, such as a record of publications in scholarly journals;
  • Scholarly experience in emerging and cross-disciplinary research areas;
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching and mentoring at the undergraduate and graduate levels;
  • Demonstrated ability in establishing interdepartmental and interdisciplinary collaborations in teaching and research;
  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace.
  • Research emphasis applicable to or experience with Hawai'i and/or the Asia/Pacific region.
  • Ability to recruit, retain, and graduate Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, and/or other underrepresented populations in Engineering.
  • Willingness towards the creation of place-based and/or Hawai'i based curriculum.
  • Willingness to learn about and implement Native Hawaiian, Indigenous, and/or place-based principles into curriculum, programming, and work culture.
