Chicana and Chicano Studies Research Assistant
POSITION
The Department of Chicana and Chicano Studies at CSU Fullerton invites applications for a Research Assistant position (Graduate Assistant classification) for the Spring 2023 semester.
We welcome applications from current CSUF graduate students in any department for a Research Assistant position that has experience with:
- ArcGeographic Information System (GIS) StoryMaps
- GIS
- Digital mapping
The assistant would be part of an on-going research project called Spatializing Commercial Displacement and Narratives of Progress: Downtown Santa Ana, 1980-2017. The assistant would assist in mapping and contextualizing the indirect displacement of businesses targeting low-income and immigrant consumers and replacement with those targeting consumers based on privilege and a host of other variables. The focus is Downtown Santa Ana where there has been controversy about the displacement of businesses along Downtown Santa Ana's La Cuatro commercial district. Santa Ana is in Southern California, about 30 miles south of Los Angeles, approximately 100 miles north of the United States-Mexico border, and 10 miles from upper-middle and upper-class coastal cities. The Research Assistant will develop maps to uncover gentrification patterns and relationships across time and space. The assistant will utilize existing data, including a business dataset, photographs, urban development documents, and other text and visuals, such as newspaper headlines, and graphic illustrations.
APPOINTMENTS FROM THIS POSTING ARE TEMPORARY AND ARE FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE SPRING 2023 SEMESTER.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- A B.A. degree in Geography, Ethnic Studies, American Studies, History, or related field or equivalent experience.
- Experience with digital mapping
PREFERRED QUALIFICATION
- Candidates should demonstrate their ability to work effectively with various sources of data to develop GIS maps and ArcGIS Storymaps, or related technology and methods.

COMPENSATION
All Graduate Assistant appointments are made under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the CSU system and the United Auto Workers. Initial appointments are for one semester only.
Classification Range: $3,051 - $5,437 per month
Anticipated hiring range depending on qualifications, not to exceed $3,602
The full-time (15 units) monthly base salaries indicated above are prorated to the number of units worked.
