*This role is fully remote on the West Coast.

Overview Kodable is looking for a 2D Technical Game Artist to help create the artwork, animations, and tools for a game used by tens of millions of kids in over 50% of US Elementary Schools. You'll work directly with a top-tier product team to create games that teach computer science to kids while *actually* being fun! Your mission: assist the art team and developers with creating new characters and worlds for an entire galaxy of coding that kids can explore. Sound exciting? Read on...

About our Company Kodable is an educational game company based in San Diego, CA that exists to make programming education available to everyone by providing resources that are easy to understand and appeal to an audience of teachers, parents and kids who are interested in technology, and want an accessible way to begin.

Join Kodable and create art and animation that sparks joy, creativity, and an interest in learning to code. You’ll collaborate with the Art Director, game designers and developers to create beautiful and engaging art for Kodable’s K-5 games.

As a 2D Technical Game Artist you will:

  • Prepare, export and deliver 2D art assets to the developers following Kodable's art guidelines
  • Import and implement 2D characters, backgrounds, UI, and other art assets into Unity
  • Animate characters, backgrounds, props and special effects in Spine and Unity and reskin for variation
  • Work closely with developers to ensure assets are implemented correctly
  • Create 2D art assets in Adobe Animate and Illustrator in the style of the product
  • Work with developers to set standards and systems that ensure graphical quality is maintained for users on many device types
  • Work with Art Director to sustain and improve an efficient art to dev pipeline
  • Work closely with artists and engineers to pinpoint and fix game performance and memory usage issues
  • Brainstorm, R&D, and help implement multiple project pipelines related to 2D animation rigs including bone-based and mesh systems
  • Keep up with the latest trends and technical tools for developing content and inspire others through knowledge sharing

Requirements:

  • 3+ years of experience working professionally as a technical artist in games
  • 2+ years of experience animating characters or semi-complex rigs in Spine
  • 2+ years of experience working with 2D vector art and rigging
  • 2+ years of experience working with the Unity Game Engine and Github (or equivalent)
  • 2+ years in Photoshop and Animate or Illustrator
  • Experience using Github or equivalent
  • Ability to create art assets matching the Kodable aesthetic per product
  • A good sense of shape, design, contrast and color, lighting and perspective
  • File organization and export best practices
  • Experience with characters, props, and backgrounds

Highly preferable if:

  • You're great at rapid iteration and are able to sketch an idea fast- you don't need to make every detail perfect initially
  • You have a strong understanding of design/engineer etiquette
  • You've made significant contributions to the release of a production-level game

Bonus points for:

  • Experience with UI design
