Position Description:
Shining Stars Montessori Academy is seeking a Children's Garden Coordinator for SY2023-2024. The School Garden Coordinator (SGC) will work with interested Guides and other staff to facilitate gardening-related and science lessons in the classrooms, as well as in the existing outdoor garden space The SGC will organize school staff, parents (SSMACA Green Committee)., and students to develop and maintain the SCHOOL GARDEN site. and a greenhouse.
They will maintain and cultivate the school's Children's Garden as a safe, engaging, and educational outdoor learning space. This position will provide hands-on lessons about gardening, food systems, cooking, and nutrition. Educators work closely with grade-level teachers to 'bake' the garden activities into the school curriculum whenever possible, supporting the school in building a culture of farm-to-table and health.
The School Garden Coordinator (SGC) :
Coordinates students' hands-on experiences in the garden (planting, tending, harvesting, and cooking );
Builds capacity within the school by co-teaching with classroom teachers and involving parents and working with the SSMACA Green committee to maintain the garden, help coordinate volunteers and secure all needed supplies.
Works collaboratively with the school's Operation grounds staff to maintain and secure the garden and garden materials.
Coordinator will provide regular updates on gardening activities to the school's weekly News & Notes.
Qualifications:
Prior experience working in a SCHOOL GARDEN
Ability to align garden activities with classroom projects
Ability to coordinate project-based activities
Love of sharing respect for the earth and its harvests with children of all ages A 'green' thumb and a 'can do attitude
Compensation:
Compensation for this experience will be based on experience. The position may be either FT or PT, a contract position, and is for 10 months. Weekend work may be necessary.
