2024 Development Sciences R&D Intern Overview
Envision spending your summer working with energetic colleagues and inspirational leaders, all while gaining world-class experience in one of the most dynamic organizations in the pharmaceutical industry. This is a reality for AbbVie Interns.
This internship opportunity is in the Center for Reaction Engineering (CRE) and Innovative Chemical Technologies (ICT) groups which play key roles in developing transformative technologies that can launch new manufacturing strategies as part of our infrastructure. Under supervision of a senior scientist, the individual will focus on enabling two continuous oxidation platforms for laboratory scale development and characterization as well as developing scale-up strategies for pilot plant scale manufacturing quantities.
Key responsibilities include:
Establish a gas-liquid reaction platform with appropriate gas, liquid, and temperature control while coupling this reactor to sensors to allow for data acquisition of flowrates, molar equivalents, and autonomous sampling with timestamps to map reaction performance under steady state and transient regime operations.
Optimize reaction platforms to drive conversion and selectivity for oxidative chemistries and generate deep understanding of physical properties of Gas-Liquid systems.
Validate tube-in-tube membrane reactor and Magic lab contactor via substrate scope for oxidation of an alcohol to aldehyde/ketone reaction using commercially available materials.
Establish reactor performance and stability data with a 1 kg run that will help validate reactor throughputs for implementation at scale.
Minimum Qualifications
Currently enrolled in university, pursuing PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related field.
Must be enrolled in university for at least one semester following the internship.
Preferred Qualifications
Developed skills in multi-phase (Gas-Liquid) chemistry and construction of flow systems with appropriate data integration and safety considerations.
Ability to conduct and interpret scientific experiments, providing suggestions for additional experiments, including design and development of new assays.
Demonstrate critical thinking and problem-solving skills, including analysis.
Self-motivated; ability to execute with limited supervision and direction. Can work independently or as part of a team.
Ability to independently troubleshoot experiments, operate laboratory reactors, and identify and solve elementary problems in experimental designs.
Proficient in required software including Microsoft Office Suite and Python.
Expected graduation date between December 2024 - July 2025.
Benefits and Amenities
Competitive pay.
Relocation support for eligible students.
Opportunity to connect with AbbVie leaders and scientists.
