Job description

  • This is a grant-funded limited-duration position funded through 12/31/25.
  • Rates posted are upon budget approval for 2024.
Why It's a Great Opportunity:
You will have the opportunity to collaborate on projects and provide recreational opportunities and leadership instruction to youth ages 13-17 through our Outdoor LIFE (Leadership Instruction & Field Experience) and Summer LIFE programs. You will be responsible for planning and implementing the program, which consists of 5 sessions of a 6-week outdoor adventure experience and ten weeks of summer activity outings. Programs take place during the week and on Saturdays during the school year.
These programs include:
  • Nature-based experiential learning and leadership development.
  • Hands-on natural stewardship service projects with embedded environmental education lessons.
  • Practice/participate in outdoor adventure activities (rock climbing, canoeing, fishing, hiking, and more.)
This position will also administer and support the Parks Department scholarship program and assist staff with other Central Region activities and events.

How to be Successful in the Role:
As a customer service-focused individual, you will lead recreational, educational, and enrichment activities while directly teaching, guiding, coaching, and motivating participants so bring in your independent judgment and decision-making skills.

Your Future in this Role:
In this special role, you will have the opportunity to develop your skills and experience in leading team building and activities and assist with delivering quality recreation opportunities to the residents of Pierce County.

Core Daily Responsibilities:
  • Coordinate recreational activities with maintenance, office, and administrative support staff.
  • Advertise the program through a variety of media sources.
  • Supervise, train and schedule extra hire employees and volunteers.
  • Assists in the coordination of facility set up for events and activities.

  • Bachelor's degree in Parks and Recreation or related field.
  • One year of experience with a recreation organization, including some supervisory/lead experience.
Relevant experience, education, or training can substitute for the above.
  • Experience with program and event planning.
  • Experience with a recreation organization.
  • Experience working with youth and teens.
Special Requirements and/or Qualifications:
  • Work a flexible schedule, which may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime.
  • A valid Washington State driver's license is required at the time of hire.
  • Possession of a current basic first aid card is required within thirty days of employment.
