YOLA Senior Program CoordinatorYOLA at Torres 

Position Status: Full Time, Non-Exempt

Reports to: Program Manager, YOLA at Torres

Compensation: Salary, $50,000 - $60,000

About the YOLA Program: 

YOLA is Music and Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel’s signature program. YOLA was inspired by El Sistema, the music education system which provides young people with free musical instruments and intensive musical instruction In Venezuela. Central to YOLA’s mission is the promotion of healthy growth and development through the study, practice and performance of music. Simultaneously, YOLA positively invests in each child’s development as a musical ambassador of peace, hope, and understanding amongst a diverse population of cultures, backgrounds and beliefs. YOLA currently serves more than 1,700 elementary, middle, and high school students throughout Los Angeles and the City of Inglewood.

About the Beckmen YOLA Center:

The 25,000-square-foot Judith and Thomas L. Beckmen YOLA Center will serve as the home of YOLA's fifth site in Inglewood as well as providing a gathering place for students from existing and future YOLA sites. In addition to its youth programming, Beckmen YOLA Center will also be a space for music educators from across the U.S. and around the world to collaborate and learn. It will be a cultural resource for the people of Inglewood, and act as the focal point of the LA Phil's commitment to community engagement in the area. The project, which has emerged out of a close collaboration between of the City of Inglewood, architect Frank Gehry, and LA Phil Music & Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel, is made possible by a leadership gift from Judith and Thomas L. Beckmen.

Position Summary: 

Under the supervision of the Program Manager, the YOLA at Torres the Senior Program Coordinator is the organizational anchor for the YOLA at Torres site. The Program Coordinator is the primary point of contact for communications with all families and young musicians enrolled in the program, ensuring they are fully informed of all programming and scheduling details. As the next level of leadership at the program site, the Senior Program Coordinator is a critical partner to the Program Manager and is prepared to lead, as needed, in the Manager’s absence for daily operations. This role requires a highly organized, detail-oriented individual who can effectively and proactively facilitate programming, assist in supervising site staff, and implement the systems and processes for a vibrant educational environment for YOLA musicians. The Senior Program Coordinator will facilitate a seamless execution of daily activities, bridge communication between staff, faculty, families, and maintain the pulse of program logistics, ensuring that all components are aligned with the strategic objectives of YOLA.

Scope of Work:

Student and Program Services:

  • Oversee the student registration process, ensuring accuracy and efficiency.
  • Manage databases and processes for tracking attendance, academic progress, and other key performance metrics.
  • Serve as the Private Lesson Coordinator for the site and liaise with Instrument Coordinators to maintain inventory database and accuracy
  • Handle the procurement of supplies and manage expense reporting within budget guidelines
  • Take the lead on coordinating events that happen at the site, including concerts, program visits and special events in collaboration with the Program Manager
  • Coordinate with key team members for all supplemental programming for YOLA musicians at the site including summer opportunities, external events, scholarship opportunities, college prep and access programming

Communication and Staff Coordination:

  • Serve as a primary communication link between students and families.
  • Organize part-time administrative assistants’ schedules and provide oversight to their daily duties 
  • Keep an up-to-date calendar for all program-related events and activities.
  • Create and disseminate a weekly bulletin highlighting program updates, schedules, and notable events to all staff and faculty.
  • Support interdepartmental communication and maintain accurate data for the site, in collaboration with the Program Manager for reporting 
  • Operational Support and Oversight:
  • Execute daily operations in alignment with strategic goals and the Program Manager's directives
  • Collect and analyze program data to inform decisions and report findings to the Program Manager
  • Address and resolve issues proactively, escalating complex problems to the Program Manager
  • Ensure that the program adheres to compliance and best practice standards
  • Ensure that all program standard operating procedures are maintained and implemented, particularly with all part-time administrative staff
  • Other duties as assigned

Position Expectations:

  • The Senior Program Coordinator is an important member of the Learning team and is central to the operations of the YOLA at Torres Site
  • The Senior Program Coordinator is expected to be an active and participatory member of the fuller Learning team and engage with all major events for the site or cross-site activities
  • The Senior Program Coordinator proactively problem-solves and anticipates the operational needs of the program, musicians and families
  • The Senior Program Coordinator will have excellent communication skills, with attention to detail, strong sense of empathy and a proactive, curious nature
  • The Senior Program Coordinator will continuously look for ways to improve the operations of logistics for YOLA at Torres and improve the experiences of important stakeholders, partners, families and students

Job Requirements

Position Requirements: 

  • Spanish-Speaking Candidates are highly preferred for this position/ Spanish language proficiency (written and verbal)
  • A love for and knowledge of music (orchestral and/or choral) 
  • A love for working with young people in a community setting
  • Previous administrative and self-governed project management experience 
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and a solutions-oriented approach to challenges
  • Strong commitment to Youth Development philosophy and embrace of social impact through music 
  • Ability to prioritize workload; Efficient and effective worker 
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment in a self-directed way 
  • Fluency in all Microsoft suites components and remote working tools (Slack, Google, Zoom, etc.)
  • Strong organization skills; detail oriented 
  • Ability to work weekends and evening 
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a desire to work on a highly collaborate, intrinsically motivated team 
  • Ability to work effectively and respectfully with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • A degree or equivalent experience in education, arts administration, or related field.
  • Proven ability in administrative coordination, preferably in an educational or non-profit setting
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills, with the capacity to prioritize and manage multiple tasks
  • Proficiency with data management systems and tools.
  • Experience working with diverse communities and a commitment to inclusivity
  • Interest and ability to be a motivational mentor and role model for students
