Position Description

Within the department, the Workers’ Compensation unit delivers exceptional customer service and proactive claims management to City employees. Our team is responsible for administering the City’s self-insured and self-administered workers’ compensation program with a human centered focus. We are looking for a compassionate and capable Worker’s Compensation Analysts to adjudicate and effectively manage workers’ compensation claims.
The work of this position requires a hybrid combination of in-office and telework. Additional occasional onsite work and meetings may be required, as dictated by business needs.
Job Responsibilities
You will be successful in this role if you have a passion for:

- Adjudicate workers’ compensation claims through well-developed action plans and appropriate and timely resolution in accordance with Title 51
- Maintaining claims management organizational practices, file coding, case management, and record keeping
- Hire, direct, and monitor independent professional consultants
- Systematically review for appropriateness of new vocational referrals on claims
- Facilitate return to work opportunities with employing departments
- Submit requests for suspension or termination of benefits as necessary
- Evaluate medical and legal information to determine when the claim can be closedBe self-motivated while utilizing sound judgement and independent decision-making in your claims management
- Maintain confidentiality and professionalism while creating positive working relationships
- Manage multiple priorities quickly while ensuring deadlines are satisfactorily met
- Washington State workers’ compensation claims handling and management, including pertinent guidelines, laws and rules
- Adjudicating workers compensation claims through developed action plans, managing timely reserve adequacy throughout the life of the claim
- Reading and interpreting medical terminology and the Washington Labor and Industries Medical Treatment Guidelines
- Calculating and paying timely benefits as owed, approving timely claim payments and adjustments
- Communicating with a wide variety of people and perspectives, including in situations that require confidently upholding your decision-making
- Managing claim recoveries, including but not limited to subrogation, Second Injury Fund excess recoveries, and Social Security and Medicare offsets
- Prepare claims for litigation, including providing testimony as requested, in consultation with the City Attorney Office and unit supervisor
- Certified Claims Administrator (through Washington Department of Labor and Industries)
- Washington Workers’ Compensation Professional designation (WWCP) preferred
Qualifications
In addition to the ability to perform the tasks described above, you will need to possess the below required qualifications:
- A Bachelor’s Degree in general education, paralegal studies, law, social science, nursing, medical coding, business administration, or a related field
- One year directly reviewing, evaluating, investigating, and processing Washington workers’ compensation, or a related field
- An Associate Degree in general education, paralegal studies, law, social science, nursing, medical coding, business administration, or a related field
- Two years directly reviewing, evaluating, investigating, and processing Washington workers’ compensation, or a related field
- Three years directly reviewing, evaluating, investigating, and processing Washington workers’ compensation, or a related field
- Professional designation as a (self-insured) Certified Claims Administrator in the State of Washington (this professional designation must be maintained throughout tenure in this classification)
- Within 6 months of hire, you must begin working toward achievement of certification as a Certified Claims Administrator through a comprehensive goal-oriented curriculum approved by the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries to achieve certification within two years
Additional Information
This overtime eligible position is classified as a Workers’ Compensation Analyst and reports to the Workers’ Compensation Manager. The full pay range for this step-progression position is $40.08 - $46.68 per hour. New employees begin at Step 1 of the pay progression, which is $40.08 hourly. Current City employees starting rate of pay will be based on Personnel Rules regarding promotions.
Interviews for this position are tentatively scheduled for the week of March 11th.
This position offers the flexibility of a hybrid work schedule. Employees will be expected to be in-office twice a week for a minimum of 4 hours per day. One of these days must be Monday, as the team has a collective in-office day on Monday mornings. Individual schedules will be based on agreement between the employee and their supervisor.
