What You Will Be Doing
The State of Alaska, Division of Forestry & Fire Protection, Alaska Coastal Dispatch Center is recruiting for two Wildland Fire Dispatchers1/2 in our Palmer office. Wildland Fire Dispatchers receive reports of incidents and initiate the initial response of appropriate fire resources. The position submits and processes requests to locate, allocate, and mobilize essential personnel, equipment, aircraft, and supplies to an incident and demobilizes resources following the conclusion of an incident. The work involves the coordination of numerous activities and functions into an overall efficient and effective support effort.

The selected incumbent will work as part of a dispatch team to provide firefighters and associated personnel with the support they need to safely fight Wildland Fires. The Alaska Division of Forestry & Fire Protection proudly serves Alaskans through Wildland Fire suppression, management, and control. The mission is to provide safe, cost-effective, and efficient fire protection services and related fire and aviation management activities on State, private, municipal, and lands negotiated through agreements commensurate with the values at risk.

Core Responsibilities
Wildland Fire Dispatcher 1
Wildland Fire Dispatcher 1s receive reports of incidents and initiate the initial response of appropriate fire resources. The position submits and processes requests to locate, allocate, and mobilize essential personnel, equipment, aircraft, and supplies to an incident and demobilizes resources following the conclusion of an incident. The work involves the coordination of numerous activities and functions into an overall efficient and effective support effort. Under immediate supervision and performing as a trainee Wildland Fire Dispatcher 1, this position will acquire the knowledge to assist in dispatching initial attack resources to Wildland Fire and apply this knowledge during fire suppression dispatching.
The Wildland Fire Dispatcher 1 functions at the trainee level in the series, where the incumbent follows a formal training plan and receives on-the-job training to perform assignments specifically selected to become familiar with policies, procedures, and regulations related to dispatch work as well as familiarization with equipment and Wildland Firefighting. Positions at this level are flexibly staffed, in which case progression to the journey level occurs only when the incumbent 1) successfully completes a specified training plan; 2) meets all other specified terms of the flexible staffing agreement and regulatory requirements; and 3) is certified by the supervisor as capable of performing at the higher level.
Wildland Fire Dispatcher 2
Wildland Fire Dispatcher 2s receive reports of incidents and initiate the initial response of appropriate fire resources. The position submits and processes requests to locate, allocate, and mobilize essential personnel, equipment, aircraft, and supplies to an incident and demobilizes resources following the conclusion of an incident. The work involves the coordination of numerous activities and functions into an overall efficient and effective support effort.
The Wildland Fire Dispatcher 2 is the journey level of the series. At this level, incumbents independently perform the full range of logistics and dispatch duties while ensuring compliance with standard methods, established contracts, rules, policies, procedures, and guidelines. Incumbents routinely act or make decisions without prior approval from higher-level staff. Lead duties may be assigned.

Our ideal applicant should have the following knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience:
Wildland Fire Dispatcher 1
  • Ability to develop knowledge of standard logistical and administrative procedures, guidelines, Incident Command System (ICS) terminology, methods and procedures, and safety requirements used in the dispatch of personnel, equipment, and supplies to support the needs of the requesting unit.
  • Ability to learn radio and communications procedures.
  • Ability to learn and practice proper dispatch policies and procedures.
  • Ability to multi-task with frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to learn fire suppression terminology, procedures, and safety protocol.
Wildland Fire Dispatcher 2
  • Working knowledge of standard logistical and administrative procedures, guidelines, Incident Command System (ICS) terminology, methods and organizational requirements, and safety requirements used in the dispatch of personnel, aircraft, equipment, and supplies to support the needs of the requesting unit.
  • Working knowledge of multi-channel radio and phone system communications procedures.
  • Skill in evaluating the nature of calls received, determining proper responses, prioritizing actions to be taken, and dispatching appropriate responses.
  • Skill in communicating clearly and concisely under stressful situations.
  • Skill in recognizing and analyzing hazardous conditions, making accurate decisions, and taking prompt, effective action.
Ideal certifications or qualifications:
  • NWCG Qualified as Initial Attack dispatcher (IADP)
  • NWCG Qualified as Aircraft Dispatcher (ACDP)
  • NWCG Qualified as an Expanded Dispatch Support Dispatcher (EDSD)
  • NWCG Qualified as an Expanded Dispatch Supervisory Dispatcher (EDSP)

Minimum Qualifications
Wildland Fire Dispatcher 1- Starting Salary $20.66
High School diploma or GED
And either
Six months of trainee or entry-level Wildland Fire fighting or forestry field experience. The required experience is met by service as a Wildland Fire and Resource Technician 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent with another employer.
Or
One year of general office clerical, warehouse, supply, or storekeeper experience.
Or
One year of radio dispatch experience.
Or substitution:
College or vocational education may substitute for fire fighting or forestry work experience (3 semester hours or 4 quarter hours of college course work is equivalent to 1 month of experience; 150 hours of vocational education equals one month of experience).
Wildland Fire Dispatcher 2- Starting Salary $23.31
High school diploma or GED
And
Certification as an Initial Attack or Support Dispatcher from the National Incident Qualification System.
Special Note:Wildland Fire Dispatchers must receive red card training and certification under the National Incident Qualification System.
