Job description

This position is with the Wildland Fire and Aviation Branch of the National Park Service's Alaska's Fire Management Teams. The incumbent will provide technical advice for short- and long-term strategic Fire Management Planning, assessments, and interagency and/or unit Fire Management plans.

Qualifications:

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement04/17/2024 unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount qualified specialized experience.

Selective Factor: This is an administrative position in an organization having a firefighting mission and is clearly in an established career path. Prior firefighting experience, as gained by substantial service in a primary firefighter position or equivalent experience outside the Federal government is a MANDATORY PREREQUISITE. Wildland firefighting experience is required to meet qualifications for secondary (administrative) covered positions. The Department of Interior defines wildland firefighting experience as: On-the-line wildland firefighting experience gained through containment, control, suppression, or use of wildland fire. Wildland fire is defined as any non-structure fire that occurs in the wildland. Two distinct types of wildland fire have been defined and include wildfire and prescribed fires as follows:

Wildfire: Unplanned ignitions or prescribed fires that are declared wildfires.
Prescribed Fires: Planned ignitions. This description includes only fireline experience on a Prescribed Fire; it does not include experience in the planning stages. Prescribed fire experience must be supplemented by fire suppression experience in order to be creditable as previous wildland firefighting experience.
You must clearly demonstrate this experience in your resume, including the months, days and hours per week at which the work was performed in order to be considered. NOTE: If your firefighting experience includes both structural and wildland, it is essential that your application materials clearly separate and document your wildland experience.

GS-09 - In addition, to qualify for this position, you must possess the following specialized experience: At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-08 level in the Federal service. Examples of specialized experience include providing professional guidance, leadership, coordination, and technical assistance for managing and applying wildland fire planning processes and procedures.

GS-011 - In addition, to qualify for this position, you must possess the following specialized experience: At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level in the Federal service. Examples of specialized experience include providing specialized and professional guidance, leadership, coordination, and technical assistance for managing and applying wildland fire planning processes and procedures. Ability to ensure fire planning policies, guidance, and procedures are consistent with National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), Clean Air Act, National Historic Preservation Act, etc. Experienced in utilizing specialized analytical decision support tools and modeling software. Exchanges and presents technical and policy information to other groups in management meetings, professional conferences, and other events. Uses geospatial information technology in strategic Fire Management Planning and coordination. Ensures Fire Management documents are updated in a timely, accurate, and defensible within established standards. Reviews Fire Management data for adequacy, appropriateness, and accuracy. Incorporates decision support tools and modeling into strategic response and planning. Guides field units on data collection and evaluation of fire hazard risk, fuels, historic fire occurrence, fire effects, climatology, and weather.

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education:There is no educational qualifications for the GS-0456 Wildland Firefighter occupational series at the GS-09 and the GS-11 grade levels.Employment Type: FULL_TIME
