Job description

Working in the great outdoors! Become part of the Wildfire Resiliency team with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) and work in the great outdoors. CDFW employees are valued and come together to manage and protect California's diverse fish, wildlife, and habitats, for their ecological values and public enjoyment! CDFW owns and manages many back county lands know as wildlife areas and ecological reserves. CDFW needs someone to help protect these wild open spaces to ensure wildlife has a place and to help enhance public safety. CDFW Fish & Wildlife Technicians help to ensure that these wildlife areas and ecological reserves are hardened against unwanted wildfires by maintain firebreaks and defensible space around buildings, structures, roads, trails, and the wildland urban interface on Department lands. Reduce ignition sources and fuel loads through mechanical (blading, mowing, tree limbing, brush removal), and maintaining road systems to allow for emergency access. Fish & Wildlife Technicians also conduct pre work project species surveys and Wildlife monitoring after work project completion.
This position is a 12 month Limited Term (LT) and may be extended up to 24 months or become permanent.
If you currently have permanent status in your position and have passed probation, you have mandatory reinstatement rights into your former position at the end of this LT appointment. If you have not had prior permanent or probationary civil service status, you will be separated from state service.
During this 12-month Limited Term assignment, you will receive full health, dental, and vision benefits! You will also earn State Service and accrue monthly leave credits.

Working Conditions
Office will be located at the Fillmore Hatchery Office, next to Cienega Springs Ecological Reserve. Involves regularly working outside in inclement weather and harsh conditions. Areas include uneven terrain in various environments. Requires ability to operate and drive numerous types of heavy equipment and 4x4 vehicles, and willingness to drive to remote locations, lift heavy objects, and ability to change hours of work due to area activities. May encounter mosquitoes, ticks and other stinging/biting insects, rattlesnakes and other wildlife. Must wear a uniform while interacting with the public. Routine work involves unusual hours and potential scheduling on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. Some overnight travel may be required.

Demonstrate ability to act independently, open-mindedness, flexibility, and tact. Perform activities independently and with others; take and provide direction on work activities; demonstrate responsibility for decision and actions. Currently have or desire to obtain appropriate Commercial Driver's License (Class A or B) for vehicles used on CDFW lands, boat operator, 4x4 Quad, and pesticide applicator (QAC) certifications. Education equivalent to completion of the 12th grade.
