Summary
This position is located within a National Forest. The primary purpose of this position is to provides technical assistance to professional research and/or natural resource personnel by accomplishing biological wildlife related support work.

Duties
  • The work performed is traditional hands-on wildlife work.
  • The incumbent performs any of the assignments listed below related to all types of wildlife, including small mammals, birds, carnivores, megafauna, fish, reptiles, amphibians, etc.
  • Individually, or as a crewmember, performs complex tasks in carrying out recurring wildlife-related projects, such as assisting in developing sampling methods collecting field data on wildlife and vegetation, and etc.
  • Performs a variety of recurring duties in the assigned area. Schedules, organizes, and executes field wildlife projects for detecting identifying and evaluating habitat management.
  • Using prescribed procedures, the technician resolves regular and recurring problems concerning wildlife project plans for habitat management.
  • Collects, complies, and summarizes the data that is obtained on wildlife habitat and vegetation for preparation of wildlife species, range allotment, deer herd, and other maps and management plans.
  • Compiles and summarizes the data obtained from aerial and ground surveys to determine vegetation types; conducts routine analyses.
  • Provides the biological and vegetation data from records and fieldwork to professional personnel after checking it and developing explanations for unusually high or low figures or figures that seem inconsistent to determine past wildlife/livestock.
  • Collects data for big game, upland game, raptors, small mammals, and threatened and endangered species. Subsequently, assists with development of reports after higher graded employees have refined and verified the data and analyzed the results.
  • Ensures that a sufficient supply of reagents, standards and controls are available at all times by ordering an adequate supply from commercial sources or preparing a variety of specialized solutions or reagents.
  • Using established procedures, calibrates, controls, and maintains a variety of instrumentation, laboratory, and field equipment.
  • When calibration falls outside acceptable limits, incumbent uses independent judgment in adjusting either the procedure or the mechanical device used in the determination to bring the procedures into good quality control.
  • Keeps accurate records and reports on the full range of research activities. Collects and performs a preliminary analysis of biological and physical data, including the inventory of habitat conditions and the needs and population of wildlife.
  • Tabulates and orders acquired field data prior to computer analysis. Computes and summarizes data and prepares charts, graphs, and figures for data analysis and public presentation.
  • Works with project collaborators and stakeholders in order to ensure cooperation, research integrity, and the achievement of agency objectives.

Qualifications

GS-06: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-5)
GS-06: There is no substitution of education for experience for this position.
Examples of specialized experience include: Completing wildlife habitat project work, and/or assessing wildlife habitat environments, requirements, and inhabitants; and collecting field data on wildlife habitat and vegetation, species condition, location, and status for habitat management and improvement plans. Compiling biological data obtained from aerial and ground surveys to determine vegetation type, wildlife, and livestock use.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.
You will be evaluated in accordance with the category rating procedure as defined in the USDA Demonstration Project Plan. Applicants who meet the basic minimum qualification requirements established for the position will be placed in the Eligible category. Eligible applicants will be further evaluated against criteria for placement in the Quality category. This evaluation is based on the level of your experience, education, and/or training as determined by your responses to the Assessment Questionnaire.
