FUNCTION:
The Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program is a supplemental nutrition program, funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Education, food vouchers and referrals are offered, free of charge, to low-income pregnant, postpartum and breastfeeding women, and infants and children younger than five years of age. The goal of the program is to improve the health of this at-risk group.
The commitment of the WIC program is to provide nutritional support (i.e., education and strategies for a healthy diet, supplemental foods, referrals and breastfeeding promotion/support), during critical times of growth and development to improve health and achieve positive health outcomes for the above mentioned at risk group.
The WIC Breastfeeding Assistant Coordinator oversees the inventory of pumps and supplies in all WIC Clinics, and Administration office. He/she will provide promotion of breastfeeding in the community, amongst participants and with the WIC Program staff. The WIC Breastfeeding Assistant Coordinator will share information about the WIC Program and its benefits to clients, and assist with WIC Program promotion/education and outreach for the purpose of maintaining and increasing participant utilization. The WIC Breastfeeding Assistant Coordinator will receive clients in a professional and courteous manner, collect appropriate data and perform the necessary associated clerical duties.
The WIC Breastfeeding Assistant Coordinator will have the ability to work well with people and have good customer service practices. This position works as a team member with other WIC staff and NWICA to help build and maintain the fidelity of the WIC program.
The WIC Breastfeeding Assistant Coordinator is expected to be an active participant in the agency’s mission, vision, and values. He/she shall work to ensure consistent, quality services to the agency’s constituents, demonstrate enthusiasm, initiative, and flexibility in assignments and maintain positive working relationships and communication with all agency personnel, will be inclusive, communicative and will establish himself/herself as a primary resource to those he/she works with.
MAJOR DUTIES:
WIC Breastfeeding Coordinator:
- Is an active member of the WIC Program and NWICA Team
- Maintains inventory of all breast pumps and supplies in all clinics.
- Contacts clients to return breast pumps.
- Assists in the training process for Peer Counselors
- Observe the breastfeeding friendliness of the WIC staff and identified site. Also, makes recommendations and follow up if needed for compliance.
- Cooperates and coordinates services with the WIC Breastfeeding Supervisor, insuring efficient, timely, and accurate implementation of breastfeeding services.
- Manages, maintains and distributes all WIC program breastfeeding supplies.
- Stays current on all changes and updates regarding breastfeeding policies.
- Prepares and/or directs the preparation of records and reports.
- Maintain any and all records required by IDOH WIC Program.
- Attends meetings, workshops, trainings, seminars relative to the WIC Program.
- Participate in regular staff meetings, staff training programs, supervisory sessions and accept responsibility for aiding the development of positive team relationships.
- Assist with WIC Program education and class facilitation. This may include but not limited to Nutrition Education, Breastfeeding Outreach and any other identified WIC Program presentations.
- Assists in the role of Designated BF Expert, providing evidence based BF information to clients.
- Performs CPA work activity if capacity warrants.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- A Qualified Nutritionist, Licensed Registered Nurse or Dietitian. Also a Bachelor’s degree in Family and Consumer Sciences (Home Economics) with an emphasis in Nutrition defined as a minimum of 9 hours in nutrition which include; 3 hours of introductory nutrition, 3 hours in life cycle nutrition or maternal/infant nutrition, 3 hours in advance nutrition.
- CPA (Competent Professional Authority) or desire and completion of the CPA program within 12 months of hire.
- WIC experience desirable with demonstrated expertise in breastfeeding management and promotion.
- Has credentials of an International Board Certified Lactation Consult (IBCLC) or has other certification
- Basic knowledge of clerical work (filing, data entry, telephone etiquette, etc.) required
- Excellent writing/editing and verbal communication skills.
- Self-starter, able to work independently, service oriented with attention to detail
- Commitment to work collaboratively with all constituent groups, including staff, volunteers, program participants, and other WIC Program supporters.
