Minimum Qualifications Regional Water Safety Coordinator should be certified (or obtain by an agreed upon date) as a “waterfront lifeguarding instructor” and have at least three seasons (six months) experience as a supervising lifeguard. The required practical leadership may have been with NYS Parks or an equivalent capacity in another organization.
Duties Description Under the direction of the Regional Safety Manager, the Water Safety Coordinator oversees regional Water Safety activities on a seasonal basis. Duties include but are not limited to:• The incumbent will communicate on a regular basis with Facility Managers and the Regional Safety Manager, in addition to the Regional Director, Assistant Regional Director, and the Director of Water Safety as needed.• Assist with recruitment, testing, hiring, and training of Water Safety personnel; review certifications and documents for acceptability.• Assist Facility Managers with selecting, onboarding, and scheduling lifeguards; ensure that all midseason and end of season evaluations are completed and collected. • Develop a meaningful pre-season orientation program and present that program to all the region’s lifeguards. • The incumbent will also recommend necessary action to achieve the safest and most efficient operation of the regional bathing facilities and ensure that an effective in-service training program is maintained and if necessary, conduct the training.• Perform regular inspections of all regional aquatic facilities; ensure that all paperwork is properly completed and collected from each park on a daily, monthly, and seasonal basis to be filed with the Regional Office and Agency Water Safety Unit. • Ensure that all end of season reports are collected and stored appropriately and copies are sent to the Director of Water Safety.• The incumbent may also assist police and the State Director of Water Safety with investigations of serious accidents, submersions, or drowning. • Assist and advise regional/park representatives regarding purchases of Water Safety equipment and review facility equipment needs for the region.• Ensure that lifeguards are re-certified at the conclusion of each season to increase retention. • Performs other Water Safety duties as assigned.
Additional Comments • Must possess and maintain a valid NYS driver’s license as a term and condition of employment.• Knowledge of current Water Safety equipment is necessary.• Must be able to communicate effectively, follow written direction, and record/document required information.• Candidate must be available to work weekends and holidays as needed.
