Water Resources Technician
Assist in a variety of water quality, lake management, wetland management and erosion control tasks related to the city’s Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) Program and the Surface Water Management Plan.

Essential Functions

Provide exceptional customer service to internal and external customers in a manner that inspires professionalism, strong communication, team building and alignment with city values.
Assist in the implementation of the city’s Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) Program and the Surface Water Management Plan:

  • Conduct inspections of basins, outfalls and stormwater best management practices that are part of the drainage system in Plymouth.
  • Review and respond to citizen concerns regarding drainage, flooding and water quality.
  • Review and inspect all active construction sites for proper erosion control and other best management practices.
  • Assist with inspection of annual pond maintenance project.

Provide support to the following education elements of the Water Resources program:
  • Coordinate the city’s Adopt-a-Drain program.
  • Participate in presentations at local schools.

Provide technical support to the following elements of the Water Resources program:
  • Assist with the collection and analysis of reports on aquatic vegetation, stream, lake and storm water system monitoring through the Water Quality Monitoring Program.
  • Represent the city at local Watershed Organizations as needed.
  • Assist in administrating the city’s Water Resources Grant and Water Efficiency Rebate Program.
Assist with survey work as needed.
Provide support for Public Works Capital Improvement Projects as needed.
Miscellaneous tasks related to city water resource management efforts.
Other duties as apparent, needed, or assigned by supervisor.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
  • Demonstrated ability to perform in accordance with the City of Plymouth’s CIVIC values (customer focus, integrity, visionary, inclusion and connection) and comfort with supporting and advancing the city council’s strategic priorities.
  • Associate’s degree in natural resource sciences or equivalent with coursework or skills in biology, chemistry, geography, or related natural sciences field.
  • Valid Class D Minnesota driver license
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office computer programs.
  • Ability to perform in team setting and communicate effectively with co-workers and the public.
  • Ability to think analytically, independently and make sound judgments.

Desired Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental studies/science, Water Resources science or related field.
  • Six months experience in Water Resources sciences or management.
  • Previous training or experience with Geographic Information Systems, GPS and Surveying.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
  • This position very frequently requires reaching (extending hands and arms in any direction), handling objects (grasping, turning or otherwise using hand or hands), sitting and stationary desk or bench work with neck bent forward.
  • The employee must lift and/or carry items such as survey and monitoring equipment, tools and utility castings from weighing 0 to 50 pounds from 0 to 50 feet.
  • The job requires working outdoors, working indoors, working near fumes and/or vapors, performing essential functions and assigned tasks in a variety of weather conditions, and driving a city or personal vehicle to perform essential functions and assigned tasks.
