Job description

Under general supervision of the Staff Services Manager I, the incumbent will provide secretarial, general office, and typing support for the field division. We are looking for someone who can provide general administrative clerical support, acting as the main receptionist for the office, giving excellent customer service to all; be the secretary for the safety committee, taking minutes and actively giving support to the safety officers; answers the main phone line for the field division and directs calls as needed; puts out mail and distributes incoming mail daily; maintains postage machine and photo-copier in the mail room; orders and stocks supplies for Administration; maintains the bulletin boards and the safety boards for the field division; back-up for other administrative staff as needed.

Department of Water Resources (DWR) was established in 1956 by the California State Legislature. We manage California’s water resources, systems, and infrastructure, including the State Water Project, in a responsible sustainable way.

Special Requirements

  • The position(s) require(s) the ability to type at a minimum speed as designated on the Class Specifications (link available in the additional documentation section). You must obtain a valid typing certificate confirming your ability to meet the minimum typing speed, prior to being hired. Additional information regarding acceptable typing tests is available at the CalCareers.ca.gov website.
Must have stamina and ability to sit at a desk and/or computer for extended periods of time; manual dexterity is required to operate office machines. Must be able to safely and efficiently move and transport office materials and/or supplies weighing up to 25 pounds. On occasion, tasks may need to be performed on uneven surfaces within the field division.

Must possess a valid California Class C Driver's License as travel will be required. Incumbent will be required to operate automotive vehicles on public roadways and travel to remote areas within the Field Division.

Employee is required to successfully complete all safety training related to the functions of the job.

The ideal candidate should have excellent communication skills both verbally and in writing. Someone who is able to work well with the general public and have exceptional customer service skills. A team player who can also work independently with a high degree of initiative. In addition, the candidate should have a strong understanding of Microsoft Office programs and be able to quickly learn new software programs and processes. We are looking for a candidate who is punctual, reliable, and who has clerical experience. The candidate should also be able to manage multiple tasks and prioritize their workload. The ideal candidate should be organized, have strong problem-solving skills, pay close attention to detail and be able to multitask. Furthermore, experience in record keeping and document handling is a desirable asset.
