The King County Science and Technical Support Section is looking for a Freshwater Scientist committed to doing applied research that monitors and protects Puget Sound and advances environmental justice. This job is an opportunity to make scientific discoveries that shape environmental policy and investments in clean water and habitat. You'll collaborate with others to gather reliable evidence, address emerging issues, and contribute to effective and equitable solutions. In this role, you will join a respected team of scientists that supports both King County and regional decision makers, keeping the interests of our communities at the core.
About the Role:
You will support King County's scientific team to understand the health of our stream systems as they face impacts from land use, pollution, and climate change. In this role, you will be working in the field, visiting various streams, collecting stream bugs, and identifying possible sources of pollution. This position works with a dynamic team that will have you working in different areas of Water Quality, with a variety of tasks from field sampling to data management and analysis. It's a dynamic and energetic position that will give you a real opportunity to do meaningful science work at a local level. This position will support the County's Clean Water, Healthy Habitat initiative. This position performs work remotely and onsite.

  • Collect and analyze date for the Pollution Identification and Correction (PIC) program.
  • Prepare technical reports and communicate findings in ways that everyone can understand.
  • Participate in the PIC steering committee and work group.
  • Coordinate and support a team of seasonal filed technicians surveying benthic macroinvertebrates for our Stream Health Monitoring Program. This will include working with the Program Manager, support onboarding of seasonal staff, and helping with day-to-day execution of the program.
  • Enter, upload, QA/QC, and wrangle data for marine and freshwater monitoring programs.
  • Collaborate as a member of the Freshwater and Marine Teams.
Qualifications You Bring:
  • Education or work experience in Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, Biology, or closely related field.
  • Experience performing quality control on data uploading date to different platforms.
  • Skill using Excel and R.
  • Experience serving as a member of a multidisciplinary team tasked with a shared goal.
  • Experience managing schedules, planning logistics, and organizing information.
It Would Be Great if You Bring:
  • Experience collecting Water Quality and/or biological samples in streams and rivers.
  • Experience developing and implementing Water Quality sampling plans and protocols.
  • Have led a multi-person team in field work for an ongoing project.
  • Have analyzed data that has helped drive decisions to inform policy or to adaptively manager and monitoring projects.
  • Ability to communicate complex concepts and technical information in ways that everyone can understand.

Working Conditions:
  • Remote and Onsite Work Details:
    Employees in this role work remotely from a home location, with onsite reporting requirements typically 1-4 times per month. The frequency of onsite work is determined by business needs and may be adjusted accordingly. Onsite reporting locations may be at various King County worksites including the collaboration space at King Street Center (201 S. Jackson St., Seattle, WA 98104).
  • Remote Work Location Requirements:
    Employees must reside in Washington State and be within a reasonable distance to King County worksites to meet onsite reporting requirements.
  • Work Schedule: This fulltime position work a 40 hour work week. This position is covered under the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is overtime eligible.
