Job description

Performs responsible clerical and technical work in the operation of the municipal central warehouse and manual work in receiving, storing and issuing supplies; does related work as required.
Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Warehouse Supervisor.
  • Receives shipments and checks quantity and quality of items received against invoices and reports discrepancies, unpacks and stores items;
  • Prepares orders for replenishing stock levels;
  • Calls vendors to locate emergency repair parts and non-stock items;
  • Analyzes turnover rates, prepares reports and recommendations;
  • Investigates inventory discrepancies;
  • Uses computer terminals to input data regarding warehouse inventory;
  • Enforces warehouse rules and procedures and prevents unauthorized access to spaces;
  • Uses roll-around ladder to put stock up, or pull orders from shelves or bins;
  • Uses telephone to take orders for materials to be issued and give information on items in stock;
  • Advises user departments regarding receipt of stores and supplies;
  • Prepares forms and performs clerical duties related to warehouse operations;
  • Participates in periodic and special inventories;
  • Prepares and maintains clerical records;
  • Organizes stocks and merchandise;
  • Operates forklift which requires use of both hands, both feet and both legs;
  • Unload tractor trailers using forklift, including large, oversized items from flatbeds;
  • Operates light truck to pick up and deliver parts and supplies, loads and unloads truck orders;
  • Trains and guides subordinate attendants;
  • Ensures that all work is performed in accordance with OSHA and City Safety Standards and Policies.
  • Graduation from High School or GED.
  • Must have valid appropriate driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina.
  • Must be able to obtain Forklift Certification within first year of employment.
  • Must be able to develop good working relationships with all types of people.
  • Must have ability to operate computer, tow-motor, forklift and pick-up trucks.
  • Must have general knowledge of modern warehouse and inventory practices; ability to count and inspect a variety of stores and materials accurately and thoroughly; ability to follow up in cases of inventory discrepancies; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to lift articles of medium to heavy weight.

1) Minimum Reasoning ability associated with this classification:
Ability to apply principles of logical thinking to work tasks and practical situations and requests made by supervisor or employees when ordering supplies; to comprehend and respond to a variety of situations in an expedient manner. Good judgment is important.
2) Minimum Math ability usually associated with this classification:
Using Arithmetic: Ability to use arithmetic to add charges for supplies and materials, complete inventories and make various reports.
3) Minimum Language ability usually associated with this classification:
Read: Ability to read stock catalogs, safety regulations, instructions, directions, packing lists, orders, prices, report information, and other documents relating to the job.
Write: Ability to write figures and make receiving reports and orders.
Speak: Ability to be conversant in voice and diction so as to participate in discussions and communicate well with supervisor, co-workers, other City personnel and the general public in person, over two-way radio and by telephone.
4) Amount of Training, either on-the-job or formal education, usually associated with this occupation in addition to the Reasoning, Math and Language detailed above:
On-the-job training approximately 4 weeks. Formal education which includes basic arithmetic and/or business math. Graduation from high school or GED minimum education.
5) Degree of Physical Demands (Strength) usually associated with this classification:
Very Heavy Work: Exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical requirements include walking, standing, climbing steps and ladders, balancing, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, grasping, lifting and stooping, although worker does sit on occasions. There is significant use of arms, hands, legs and feet.
6) Type of Physical Demands usually associated with this classification:
Reaching, Handling, and Fingering: (Reaching - Extending the hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction). (Handling - Seizing, holding, grasping, turning, or otherwise working with hand or hands (fingering not involved). (Fingering - Picking, pinching, or otherwise working with fingers primarily (rather than the whole hand or arm as in handling). All are requirements of this job.
Talking and/or Hearing: (Talking - Expressing or exchanging information by means of the spoken word). (Hearing - Perceiving nature of sounds by ear). Both necessary to converse with employees by telephone when receiving supplies and materials orders.
Seeing: The ability to perceive the nature of objects by the eye. Recommended guidelines for vision are:
1. Acuity, far - Clarity of vision at 20 feet or more. Must be able to see when operating truck to deliver supplies. Both eyes 20/22 - R 20/25 - L 20/25 corrected
2. Acuity, near - Clarity of vision at 20 inches or less. Must be able to see computer, order forms and paper work. Both eyes 20/22 corrected
3. Depth Perception - Three-dimensional vision. Ability to judge distance and space relationships so as to see objects where and as they actually are. Must be able to judge distances so as to use both hands in performing different tasks at the same time. Depth Perception - 5
4. Field of Vision - Area that can be seen up and down or to right or left while eyes are fixed on a given point. Must be able to see wide span of area to cover warehouse area and employees entering and leaving area.
5. Accommodation - Adjustment of lens of eye to bring an object into sharp focus. This item is especially important when doing near-point work while glancing up to check entire work area. Must be able to adjust the lens of the eyes to glance quickly at computer or employees who are located at varying distances. Necessary for safety purposes.
6. Color Vision - Ability to identify and distinguish colors. Necessary to this position because items received must be checked for color coding.
7) Environmental Conditions (Physical Surroundings) usually associated with this classification:
The Worker is subject to Inside and Outside Environmental Conditions: Exposed to the various weather conditions and temperatures when delivering supplies and protected from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes when working inside the warehouse.
8) Environmental Conditions (Hazards) usually associated with this classification:
Employee will be exposed to trash, transformers which are leaking PCB contaminated oil. Employee must store and move PCB contaminated oil in drums.
9) Machines, Tools, Equipment, and Work Aids which may be representative, but not all inclusive, of those commonly associated with this type of work.
Tow-motor, forklift, pick-up truck, hand truck, ladders, computer, typewriter, calculator, pens, pencils, Personnel Resolution, hammers, crow bar, screw drivers, tape machine, tape measure, power saws, caulking gun, paint brush and roller, drill, hand saws, files, note pads, calendar, flashlight, grease gun, hole puncher, dymo tape machine, hand wrenches, photo copier, staple gun, scissors, paper clips, telephone and directory, printer, weight scales, floor sweeper, brooms and mops.
