This role is work-from-home with occasional travel to other Common Threads markets, as needed. The preferred candidate location is in one of the following markets: Austin, TX; Los Angeles, CA; Miami, FL; New York City; or Chicago; IL.

VP Finance and Administration

(Full-Time, Remote)

In partnership with the CEO, Board of Directors, and Leadership Team, the VP of Finance and Administrationwill execute the organizational strategy and implement new processes and approaches. The VP of Finance and Administration must have a proven track record of change management and a history of fostering continuous improvement within their organizations.

The CEO and the Board of Directors will choose a mission-focused, seasoned, strategic, and process-minded leader with expertise in scaling an organization, leading a management team, and sustaining a performance culture among a group of diverse, talented individuals.

This is a full-time, exempt position that reports to the CEO. Common Threads offers flexible scheduling when possible, and a collegial working environment. Furthermore, the VP of Finance and Administration will have an opportunity to make a significant impact at the organization and across the broader nonprofit nutrition education and public health sector.

Responsibilities:

Operations and Strategic Management  (30%)

  • Manage up to four (4) direct reports who work within the Finance and human resources verticals
  • Oversee operations for finance & payroll, technology, and human resources; support and advise on the achievement of strategic goals and objectives
  • Collaborate with the CEO, Board of Directors, and Leadership Team to drive the execution of key organizational strategies
  • Drive performance management strategies that lead to improvements in community impact, capacity building, and organizational health-related goals
  • Guide the collection and analysis of data regarding the organization’s performance and prepare and present reports to the CEO, Board of Directors, and Leadership Team
  • Build a system for monitoring compliance required for grants and legal contracts that involve finance, programs, and development teams
  • Act as the operations liaison to the Board of Directors by communicating updates and insights about strategic and operations performance during Board meetings

Fiscal Management (25%)

  • Lead and manage the annual operating and strategic planning and budget cycle; set clear and measurable objectives and provide ongoing assessments for progress updates
  • Oversee Finance and financial reporting (e.g. review and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements), forecasts, planning, budgeting, financial analysis, cash management, and procurement
  • Provide strategic guidance on the development of an annual staffing budget, as it relates to talent acquisition and salary benchmarking for future organizational growth and sustainability
  • Oversee the budgeting and spending on organizational priorities and investments, including human resources, technology, and general operations
  • Work closely with the VP Growth and their development team to establish organizational fundraising goals, reporting, projections, and reconciliation procedures.

Human Resources & Organizational Culture (25%)

  • Collaborate across departments to ensure that processes are aligned with the strategic direction of the organization, support its mission and values, and strengthen its culture and identity
  • Support and advance a culture of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging across all organizational effort
  • Build and execute an internal communications plan
  • Provide continuous learning and professional development opportunities for staff
  • Create and integrate performance management plans for the organization and individual staff
  • Mentor, guide, and develop a diverse and talented team, nurturing a culture of collaboration, respect, empathy, continuous improvement, and results orientation

Capacity Development & Evaluation (15%)

  • Establish norms and objectives for implementing data-informed decision-making processes at the organization
  • Improve reporting and dissemination practices of R&E key findings and insights in order to strengthen a culture for organizational learning and continual improvement
  • Continuously evaluate and refine strategies to enhance the efficacy and sustainability of Common Threads’ initiative
  • Leverage data and relevant KPIs to drive decision-making
  • Lead the performance management process that measures and evaluates progress against strategic plan goals for the organization

Technology (5%)

  • Provide strategic guidance on the improvements of current systems based on organizational needs and operational direction that drive improvements in organizational performance (e.g. AI-powered algorithms & IT-related software, vendors, automating repetitive tasks and procedures, improving forecasting, streamlining compliance, chatbots, invoice management)

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business Administration, Business Management, Nonprofit Management, Organizational Management, or a related field
  • At least 10 years of national nonprofit experience, with a minimum of five years of leadership/senior management experience, directing staff members in strategic planning and implementation of direct service programs
  • Senior-level management experience in anti-hunger, anti-poverty, or child and family-focused nonprofit organizations funded by state and federal grants, ideally with broad reach in multiple geographic locations
  • Experience with managing a full range of business functions and systems, including strategic development and planning, business analysis, budgeting, finance, human resources, and information systems
  • Ability to think strategically and with vision, anticipate possible future consequences and trends and incorporate them into the organizational plan
  • Track record of building and leading effective, diverse teams and working with culturally diverse constituencies
  • Proven track record of exceeding goals with a bottom-line orientation and ability to consistently make good decisions through a combination of analysis, wisdom, experience, and judgment
  • High level of business acumen including successful P&L management with the ability to balance the delivery of quality programs in consideration of available resources
  • Easily navigates technology; proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Google Drive
  • Outstanding project management skills, including the ability to handle multiple assignments, prioritize, and meet deadlines
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to make effective oral presentations to large and small groups
  • Strong relationship and partnership-building skills 

Preferred: 

  • Knowledge of Salesforce, Slack, and Asana
  • A passion for utilizing technology (i.e. AI) to enhance operational effectiveness

Additional Information:  

This position maintains a traditional workweek schedule (generally 9am-5pm, Monday-Friday), but may require some weekend and evening work for special projects and events

Salary & Benefits:

  • Salary range: $110,000 - 116,000
  • Common Threads offers a comprehensive benefits package including a competitive salary, 20 days of paid time off, 15 paid holidays, 3 floating holidays, ½ day summer Fridays, and benefits that include medical (Aetna), dental, vision, Employee Assistance Program, and a 401(K) with company match
