Job Summary

The Department of History at Purdue University Fort Wayne seeks a Visiting Assistant Professor in United States history. Specialization and time period are open, but preference given to specializations in African American history and fields that complement our current teaching and research strengths. This is a nine-month, full-time teaching position for the 2024-2025 academic year with a competitive salary and benefits package.


The teaching load is four courses per semester, comprising 4 total course preparations for the academic year. The Visiting Assistant Professor will teach U.S. survey courses, as well as a selection of upper-level courses in their area of specialization.Opportunities to teach an interdisciplinary, team-taught topics course for the College of Liberal Arts also exist.Additional responsibilities include contributing to the mission and culture of the department.


Qualifications

Applicants must either hold a Ph.D. in history or must have earned a Ph.D. by the start of the 2024 Fall Semester. The applicant must demonstrate relevant teaching experience and effectiveness in the classroom.

We have averaged around 120 majors in recent years; about half of our majors are dual degree students, earning degrees in both history and secondary education, many of whom go on to teach history in high school. We are proud of our dedication to student mentoring. The Visiting Assistant Professor will have the opportunity to work with faculty mentors and serve as mentor to students.
