ABOUT THE POSITION

The Vice President of Finance role reports directly to the CEO and will lead the day-to-day operations of the finance, accounting, and administrative areas of a growing international nonprofit organization headquartered in the US, but with extensive collaboration across country offices for ensured global alignment and development.

The salary range for this position is $160,000 to 185,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

1) Safeguard the organization’s financial resources

  • Establish, maintain and document accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls
  • Cash management and forecasting
  • Treasury management, including foreign currency policy, exchange practices and all US banking activities
  • Assess and report on financial risks to various stakeholders

2) Planning and Budgeting - Lead global budgeting and planning processes

  • Participates in developing and implementing short and long-term strategic plans that supports the organization’s vision and goals
  • Develop annual global operating budgets, in cooperation with country finance directors
  • Identify funding gaps/surpluses, working with business development and country offices to steward targeted funding
  • Lead SWN Finance Committee and financial presentations to SWN Board of Directors

3) Accounting and Finance - Manage internal and external global consolidated financial reporting. Ensure compliance with financial reporting requirements: including regulatory, tax and funder requirements, and apply appropriate accounting standards

  • Preparation of global consolidated internal financial and management reports, including budget variance analysis, working with country finance managers
  • Oversee and coordinate annual global US consolidated audit with CPA firm. Should have strong understanding of US GAAP standards
  • Oversee & coordinate the preparation of annual 990 and other tax filings with CPA firm
  • Hands-on accounting work: including select transactional accounting entries, as well as creation and maintenance of custom finance and accounting reports.
  • Oversight of grants and funder reporting - ensuring appropriate revenue recognition and cost allocations, compliance with grant agreements, approved grant budgets and any regulatory requirements, coordinating with all country offices .
  • Funding proposals - assist with financial aspects of proposals under development
  • Participate in preparation of Annual Report to external stakeholders with country offices
  • Monitor and manage SWN charity watchdog accounts
  • Management and oversight of accounting system infrastructure, local and global consolidation, for ensuring timely and accurate financial reporting

4) Human Resources – Plan, direct, and coordinate staffing to achieve the strategic objectives described in the organizational plans, while maintaining and evaluating employee relations and human resources policies, programs, and practices:

  • Oversee HR function to include employee benefits and payroll, as well as ensure compliance with employment policies and laws for US
  • Maintain a current Organizational Plan, assist in identifying resourcing needs
  • Maintain the US employee handbook and implement HR policies
  • Support recruiting requirements as needed, working with functional department heads
  • Manage annual employee performance review process, ensuring timely completion and compliance with applicable laws
  • Oversight of HR in country offices, as required

5) Administrative & Operations - Responsible for ensuring resources are in place for a high-functioning office, with support systems needed to achieve global organizational goals.

  • Risk Management – ensure insurance policies are current and maintain appropriate coverages
  • Organizational Recordkeeping & Legal – responsible for maintaining and organizing corporate documentation, including required legal filings & registrations, board documentation. Help identify, manage, and minimize the organization’s legal risks, with pro-bono support
  • Contract management - oversee consultant and contractor relations, including HQ office and third-party service providers
  • Manage additional policies as applicable to company operations (funders, website, etc.)
  • Office management systems & IT systems – manage and oversee outsourced IT provider and IT organizational IT systems implementations
  • Coordinate with Business Development teams to ensure efficient donor stewardship, tracking and reporting systems are in place

REQUIREMENTS

Must possess current and valid US Work Authorization and be eligible to work for any US employer without sponsorship.

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required, CPA or CMA a plus. MBA or equivalent advance finance degree highly desired.

Experience: minimum of 10 years in progressive professional accounting and finance experience, with at least 5 years of experience with nonprofit organizations. Strong working knowledge of US GAAP with experience in multiple currencies and accounting consolidations highly preferred. Experience working with international teams, particularly in Africa & Asia, also desired.

Technical Proficiency:

  • Strong skills with Microsoft Office tools and products (Excel, Teams, SharePoint, Word, PowerPoint), including ability to leverage up-to-date technology to enhance the organization’s efficiency, communication and reporting
  • Exemplary Microsoft Excel skills, including pivot tables and charting
  • Experience required with FundEZ, or similar not-for-profit specialized accounting program

Travel: ability and desire to travel internationally to Ghana and India offices as needed, approximately 15% to 30% of time.

Position Details: Full Time Exempt- 40 hours per week, typically Monday - Friday 9-5 with occasional nights and weekends according to business needs.

Special Working Conditions

Standard office working conditions. Hybrid work format with remote and on-site work in NYC based office.

Physical Requirements

Sedentary work. Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Repetitive motion. Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers. The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading.
