Vice President - Education Research - Chicago or Remote

JOB DESCRIPTION:

NORC at the University of Chicago, an objective and non-partisan research organization with more than 80 years of leadership in program evaluation, data collection, data analysis, and information dissemination, seeks a Vice President for our Education Research Department (ECD). The new Vice President will join the department's leadership team in developing and implementing a strategy to further expand a growing portfolio of work in evaluation and technical assistance, especially from federal agencies. This is a strategic role that will further develop a world-class educational research function at one of the nation's most respected research institutions, significantly impacting NORC's success and service to our clients.   

Applicants would preferably work from either our Chicago, IL or Washington, DC offices but remote candidates will also be considered with regular trips to our offices.

DEPARTMENT: Education and Child Development

For more than 40 years, NORC has been committed to conducting high quality Education Research. Our department's research covers the full array of education-relevant populations, from birth across the life course. The scope of our Education Research methodologies is wide-ranging, as well - including experimental and quasi-experimental designs, formative evaluations, and case studies--all with a focus on culturally responsive and equitable approaches.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Collaborate with the Senior Vice President and Vice President to develop and implement a strategy to strengthen and grow ECD's Federal evaluation and TA portfolio.
  • Lead business development efforts with IES and other Federal agencies as well as  with foundations, state and federal governments, large school districts, universities, commercial partners. 
  • Lead major research and data analytics projects.
  • Foster an environment that promotes professional growth of ECD staff.
  • Support a cohesive, team-oriented culture across a geographically dispersed staff and promote communication and integration among all members.
  • Develop and maintain client relationships.
  • Develop and maintain key partnerships with other research organizations and research leaders that will support and advance the success of ECD.
  • Further grow the ECD research team both through the development of current staff and the strategic recruitment of new professionals with additional capabilities.
REQUIRED SKILLS:
  • Master's degree in education, child development, social sciences, or another relevant discipline is required; doctorate preferred.
  • At least 10 years of directly applicable work experience in a nonprofit organization, research organization or government agency is required.
  • Demonstrated success with business development and proposal or grant writing.
  • Significant experience leading IES evaluations or technical assistance contracts.
  • In-depth knowledge of What Works Clearinghouse standards. 
  • Deep understanding of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).
  • A commitment to incorporating principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion into research and interactions with colleagues.
  • A well-rounded interpersonal skill set with a demonstrated ability to build relationships with clients, funders, and education leaders, and to work effectively in a team environment.
  • A track record for building, developing, managing and retaining a team of highly capable research professionals.
  • Travel for site visits and meetings may be required.
SALARY AND BENEFITS:

The pay range for this position is $191,000 to $319,000. The budgeted range for this role is: $191,000-$260,000.

This position is classified as regular. Regular staff are eligible for NORC's comprehensive benefits program. Benefits include, but are not limited to:
