Lexicon Pharmaceuticals is currently recruiting for an agile, highly motivated Vice President and Head of Sales. This role can be based in our The Woodlands, Texas or Bridgewater, New Jersey locations, or given the scope of the role can also be field based.

The Vice President and Head of Sales will be responsible for building, developing and maintaining a high performing field sales function for Lexicon Pharmaceuticals. The role will be responsible for leading the sales organization through the ongoing launch of INPEFA® for the treatment of heart failure. This role will provide ongoing leadership, coaching and development for the field sales team, sales training and sales operations and will be accountable for this team in helping to meet our business and sales objectives. This role will report to Lexicon’s Chief Commercial Officer and will be a key member of the Commercial Leadership Team.

Key Responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Inspiring, building, leading, coaching the sales organization to achieve optimal sales results.
  • Defining clear objectives, allocating resources, monitoring activities, allocating fair rewards and sales incentive plans, providing developmental opportunities, and developing strong employees.
  • Developing and ensuring execution against our commercial business plans by ensuring that key strategies and tactics are executed flawlessly while collaborating and partnering with the broader commercial leadership team and partner functions.
  • Develop annual business plan and sales for the budgets for the sales force in close alignment with marketing team.
  • Overseeing the handling of key accounts and providing a high level of disease and product expertise and ensuring customer service to all accounts.
  • Working effectively as a core leadership team member across multiple cross functional teams including market access, medical affairs, regulatory, clinical development and advocacy.
  • Responsible for driving the marketing plan by executing against key SF tactics.
  • Ensuring operational systems and training are in place, to enable the Sales Leadership Team to evaluate regional and territory business plans and sales results.
  • In conjunction with Chief Commercial Officer, develop portfolio sales strategy and tactics, devise and implement sales tools, and roll out to wider organization.
  • Develop and prepare annual business plan with aligned sales budgets (revenues and opex) and ongoing responsibility to ensure pull-through.
  • Provide strategic and tactical support to executive management on sales execution.
  • Ensure timely and accurate collection, analysis, management, and dissemination of Sales data.
  • Determine and manage sales force effectiveness through intensive data analysis, present the findings and make recommendations to drive performance; escalate issues to executive leadership as needed.
  • Work closely with key Commercial stakeholders to determine KPIs and prepare dashboards, monitor department performance against KPIs, and implement improvement strategies as needed.
  • Identify drivers of top and bottom performance and recommend strategies for improvement.
  • Take a proactive approach to understand the needs of the sales teams, and facilitate effective recruitment, coaching, mentoring, and training programs to increase the capabilities of the sales team.
  • Understand territory sales performance in conjunction with sales force execution and business needs.
  • Facilitate the design and ongoing administration of incentive compensation plans for the sales force that motivate field personnel and support the commercial sales/profit objectives.
  • Ensure sampling policies and practices comply with FDA regulations.
  • Manage all related activities supporting SFA/CRM solutions.
  • Determine, create, and implement appropriate training needs and opportunities for sales team.
  • Additional duties as assigned by Chief Commercial Officer.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree is required; MBA degree is preferred
  • A minimum of 15 years pharmaceutical leadership experience with extensive experience leading manager level teams
  • Cardiology experience and knowledge is preferred but not required
  • Demonstrated experience leading teams in delivering above expectation sales results
  • Ability to analyze complex data and information and develop key strategies and propose solutions to address issues
  • Proven track record of inspirational leadership, employee and cultural development and performance management
  • Ability to partner and influence effectively across a highly matrixed organization including Marketing, Sales Operations, Medical, Value & Access, etc.
