Overview

MercyOne Central Iowa operates four not-for-profit Catholic medical centers in Des Moines West Des Moines Newton and Centerville and two specialty hospitals – MercyOne Children’s Hospital in Des Moines and MercyOne Rehabilitation Hospital in Clive (965 beds total) – along with more than 20 additional facilities that house more than 50 primary care pediatric internal medicine and specialty clinics. Founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1893 MercyOne Central Iowa has the longest continually operating hospital in Des Moines and is also one of the largest employers in the state with more than 7000 employees and a medical staff of more than 1000 physicians and allied health associates. MercyOne Central Iowa is a member of MercyOne which was founded in 1998 through a collaboration between CommonSpirit Health and Trinity Health – two of the country’s foremost not-for-profit Catholic health organizations. MercyOne has more than 20000 colleagues in Iowa and surrounding states.


Responsibilities

GENERAL SUMMARY:

 

Directs, administers and coordinates the activities of the organization in support of established policies, goals, and objectives.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Guides and directs management in the development, production, promotion, and financial aspects of the organization’s services.
  • Directs the preparation of short-term and long-range plans and budgets based on broad corporate goals and growth objectives.
  • Oversees managers who direct department activities that implement the organization’s business plan.
  • Creates the structure and processes necessary to manage the organization’s current activities and its projected growth.
  • Operate required vehicle(s) in a safe manner to perform required duties of the position.

 

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Maintains a sound plan of corporate organization, establishing policies to ensure adequate management development and to provide for capable management succession as well as staff development.
  • Provides leadership and programs that attract, retain, and motivate employees; Ensures that the responsibilities, authorities, and accountability of all direct subordinates are defined and understood.
  • Participates in meetings of administrative group and other committees.
  • Develops and installs procedures and controls to promote communication and adequate work flow within the organization.
  • Evaluates and ensures the quality of assigned department’s programs and services and promotes quality improvement.
  • Establishes operating policies consistent with the chief executive officer’s broad policies and objectives and ensures their execution.
  • Evaluates the results of overall operations regularly and systematically and reports these results to the chief executive officer.
  • Ensures that all organization activities and operations are carried out in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations and laws governing business operations.
  • Acts on behalf of the CEO in his/her absence.
  • Analyzes patient satisfaction survey data and assists managers in establishing an appropriate plan of action as needed to improve customer service.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Valid Iowa Driver’s/Chauffeurs License required, must meet Mercy’s Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, must be at least 18 years of age and be eligible to drive per Iowa state law.
  • Master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA) or Master’s in Healthcare Administration (MHA)
  • Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter – Child and Dependent Adult Abuse training within three (3) months of hire.
  • Seven to ten years related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Word, Outlook, PowerPoint and Excel Experience and Knowledge
