Summary
The Utilities Financial Analyst will analyze waste management and recycling collection, processing and disposal operations, operating and capital expenses, and material generation to derive rational and defensible rates and fees that provide sufficient revenue to maintain system financial health.
Responsibilities
The Utilities Financial Analyst will:
- Organize and process financial and other data to create uniform, sortable data sets for subsequent analysis and to ensure data integrity
- Build logical spreadsheet-based financial models to provide financial guidance
- Be (or quickly become) the Firm’s leading expert in Excel
- Support client projects by providing timely and accurate financial analyses
- Interpret data, future trends, and economic influences
- Support the budget/forecast process for projects
- Prepare ad hoc reports per the Principal’s request
Qualifications
Experience
- 1-5 years of experience as a Financial Analyst or other role relying heavily on spreadsheets
- Forecasting, detailed budgeting, high-quality chart and graph development (i.e., for publication) experience
- Experience in the waste and recycling industry, utility industry, or a related environmental industry preferred
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Accounting, Business, Data Analytics or related field
- Microsoft Excel certification preferred
Strong Aptitude in Excel
- All basic mathematical functions: SUM, AVG, SUMIF(S), PRODUCT, MIN, MAX, MINIF(S), MAXIF(S)
- Logic based functions: AND, OR, IF
- String management functions to clean data: TRIM, LEFT, RIGHT, CONCAT
- Lookup functions, especially XLOOKUP
- Array formulas, conditional formatting, filtering/sorting
- Pivot tables
- Visually appealing charts and graphs, following company guidelines
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Excellent analytical and mathematical abilities
- Excellent problem solving skills
- Very detail-oriented
- Ability to work with confidential data
- Great communication (oral and written) with ability to communicate effectively with staff of all levels
- Ability to stay on task and meet deadlines
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Outlook, PowerPoint
- Familiarity with GAAP and Financial Statements
- Must maintain a valid driver’s license
