2024 UPWARD BOUND SUMMER RESIDENT DIRECTOR POSITION

TITLE:Resident Director

CLASSIFICATION: Full-time/Summer Position/Student/Non-Exempt Contingent I

SALARY RANGE:$7,000 stipend plus Room and Board included

EMPLOYMENT DATES: June 12 - August 7, 2024

Mandatory training will be held the week of June 17, 2024

DESCRIPTION/RESPONSIBILITIES: The primary objective of the Resident Director is to cultivate a safe and secure living-learning community for high school students enrolled in Pre-College Programs- Upward Bound’s six-week residential program. The Resident Director ensures the well-being of the staff and students in their charge, especially regarding safety, morale, discipline, interpersonal relationships within the group, and application to studies. The Resident Director (RD) lives in the residence hall and provides 24-hour supervision for staff and students in the program. The RD is on call nightly from 11:00 -7:00 am and must be on-site from Sunday until Friday evening until students are dismissed for the weekend.

Specific responsibilities will include:

  • Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate all residential staff.
  • Communicate with program professional counselors to ensure the dissolution of conflict and resolution of student concerns.
  • Enforce program and University rules and regulations to ensure efficient and effective program operations and compliance.
  • Meet with the Program Director or designee daily to ensure service continuity.
  • Address all student and residential staff concerns and communicate to the Director in a timely manner.
  • Assigned rooms for students and staff members residing in UMD resident halls.
  • Supervise weekly check-in and check-out procedures.
  • Conducted in-service training and weekly staff meetings for tutor-counselors and the Nutrition Monitor.
  • Monitor residence hall to ensure students are safe and secure during evening hours and after curfew.
  • Determine the need for facility maintenance and repairs and notify the appropriate departments.
  • Handle student conflicts and hold mediation sessions as needed.
  • Closely monitor students to determine their need for medical or mental health interventions.
  • Assist with Organizing and chaperoning program field trips as needed.
  • Assist with recruiting eligible and qualified students to participate in the intensive six-week academic, residential summer program.
  • Supervise students during meals to ensure that the nutritional guidelines for MD State summer food are met.
  • In the Director’s absence in the evenings, resolve student health or behavioral issues with parents and families.

QUALIFICATIONS: Graduate Student or recent college graduate. Strong written and oral communication skills. Excellent organizational and leadership skills. Prefer prior supervisory experience and experience working with economically and educationally disadvantaged youth.
