The University Attorney primarily will be responsible for providing legal counsel on labor and employment matters, including but not limited to collective bargaining, labor relations and discrimination law, as well as related practice areas unique to educational institutions, such as Title IX, student discrimination and disability claims, and faculty and student affairs. The University Attorney also will handle and assist with other types of disputes and litigation (managing and working with outside counsel) and faculty and student affairs matters. Other responsibilities will include policy development, training, the conduct of investigations, supervision of litigation, and related duties.
Basic Qualifications:
- JD with a minimum of ten years' relevant experience at a law firm, in-house, and/or government.
- Admission to practice in Massachusetts, or willingness to obtain admission to practice within two years.
Additional Qualifications and Skills:
Experience advising institutions of higher education or other non-profit entities. Strong research, writing, analytical and counseling skills. Ability to balance multiple and competing deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Demonstrated ability to communicate well with a broad range of clients and advise on general labor, employment, and related issues. Strong interpersonal skills, judgment, and empathy. Ability to handle a variety of legal matters that may arise at a large research university outside of the labor and employment practice area, including litigation. Familiarity with or willingness to work with laws relating to benefits administration a plus. The successful candidate will join a 17-lawyer office handling a wide range of legal and policy matters for A Private Ivy League Research University.

Working Conditions:
This position involves a hybrid work schedule (currently three days onsite/two days remote). The Office of the General Counsel may alter this schedule as the office's needs and circumstances change. Employees must be willing to commute to the office in Cambridge as required.
