POSITION TITLE: Unit Clerk
DEPARTMENT: Nursing
REPORTS TO: Nurse Supervisor
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Unit Clerk provides a clerical support function at the nursing station. Clerical support includes telephone communication, typing, data entry, scheduling of some personnel and requisition of medical supplies from Central Supply.
RESPONSIBILITIES/ACCOUNTABILITIES:
1 Maintains employee folders;
2 Delivers new admission chart to unit and initiates forms in preparation for admission;
3 Faxes physicians’ orders daily - first thing in the morning from the previous shifts;
4 Delivers any faxed printouts to the appropriate department;
5 Completes daily transfer of the vital signs and weights from the daily assignment sheet to the resident’s chart;
6 Checks the supply drawer at the nurses’ stationand re-stocks as needed;
7 Maintains an orderly and neat nurses’ station;
8 Screens all incoming phone calls for nursing and forwards messages;
9 Schedules appointments with physicians for the residents; relays the information to nursing;
10 Initiates any phone calls to the physician, family members or personnel;
11 Types as directed by Nursing Administration;
12 Schedules professional agency personnel as directed and supervised by the DNS - is to be the contact person for the agency;
13 Notifies the Food Service Department of any dietary changes;
14 Maintains a current bathing schedule on the bath record for nurse aides;
15 Greets visitors, guests, residents, etc. and provide information/directions in accordance with company policies and procedures;
16 Ensures that residents and families receive the highest quality of service in a caring and compassionate atmosphere which recognizes the individuals’ needs and rights;
17 Ordering medical supplies, under the direction of the DNS;
18 In the planned absence of the Central Supply Clerk, the Unit Clerk will fill medical supply requests.
19 The Unit Clerk will also act as Relief Receptionist when the Receptionist is on vacation, ill, or on other planned absences;
20 Performs other duties as assigned or requested.
SPECIFIC EDUCATIONAL/VOCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
1 The Unit Clerk position requires a high school degree with college/business school coursework.
2 Experience with medical terminology and transcription is preferred.
3 Must be able to read, write and understand the English language.

1 Must have strong organizational ability.
2 Must be able to handle a variety of assignments, some of moderate complexity and requiring considerable familiarity with the operating details of the facility.
3 Must be able to interpret and apply departmental procedures.
4 Must be able to be courteous and tactful at all times.
5 Must be able to operate a typewriter and computer.
6 Must demonstrate discretion in handling of confidential information.
7 Must have good manual dexterity.
8 Must provide annual verification of a negative TB skin test.
