Job Summary
The City of Bellevue Transportation Department has a unique opportunity for a graduate student intern who is self-motivated and team-oriented to join our team of professionals in the Long Range Planning (LRP) Division.
LRP works with the Transportation Commission, the City Council, a broad cross-section of disciplines within the City of Bellevue staff organization, other boards and commissions, and community stakeholders to establish a vision for the city's multi-modal transportation system, develop and implement policy, and engage the public to create blueprints on how best to maintain, sustain and improve the city's multi-modal transportation system.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
We are currently hiring a Transportation Planning Intern available to work through the 2024-2025 school year, part-time when school is in session (20 hours or fewer per week) and full-time (30-40 hours a week) during summer months and school breaks (if available).
This position is ideal for a graduate student with an interest in advancing walking, bicycling, and transit travel options. We anticipate significant career development will occur while working on Vision Zero road safety, bicycle implementation, and transit service and capital planning assignments described below and under the supervision and mentoring of senior staff. Representative responsibilities might include assisting staff in:
- Collecting, entering, tabulating, and analyzing various types of data including traditional crash data sets and emerging data sources to assess the safety of transportation facilities.
- Support field data collection activities to verify existing and potential bike rack opportunities, bus layover and stop locations, and pick-up/drop-off zones for shuttles.
- Organizing and staffing community outreach activities including road safety events such as World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims.
- Mapping and analyzing suggested safe streets improvements identified in Road Safety Assessments as well as candidate bicycle improvement concepts.
- Producing literature reviews on road safety topics (e.g., speed safety cameras) to support senior staff in Vision Zero program development.
- Researching new mapping features to incorporate in the city's Transit, Vision Zero, Active Transportation (pedestrian and bicycle), and Mobility Implementation Plan story maps.
- Authoring narrative and producing graphics for identified sections of the 2024 Bicycle Friendly Community submittal application.
- Supporting the development of performance monitoring memos including trends in transit service and usage.
- Conducting technical analyses and preparing presentations on proposed bus route changes, supportive transit speed, reliability, and bus stop infrastructure projects.
- Responding to emails, letters, and other communications from the public.
Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
- Familiarity with Transportation Planning principles, practices, and methods as applicable to a municipal setting.
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Provide exceptional customer service when communicating with residents.
- Ability to work in a team environment or independently.
- Ability to research projects, problem solve, and present conclusions.
- Ability to complete projects within specified timeframes.
- Ability to successfully manage multiple projects.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with employees at all levels and the public.
- Knowledge in using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Knowledge of ArcGIS and Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, InDesign) preferred.
- Enrolled full-time in a graduate program in Urban Planning, Civil Engineering, Geography, Public Administration, or a related field.
- Previous work experience preferred.
- Safe driving record and valid current Washington State driver's license

- Must be terminated as a student intern when no longer associated with an education program.
- At-will for the duration of the student intern status.
