Job description

This is a paid internship, range of $19/hr - $35/hr (depending on role and qualifications) for those currently pursuing undergraduate degrees and higher rates for those currently pursuing graduate level degrees.

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

Sound Transit’s Access, Integration, and Station Area Planning (AISAP) program is responsible for planning and facilitating high-quality passenger access to and Station Areas at existing and future Sound Transit stations and facilities across the Puget Sound Region throughout the Puget Sound region – Link, Sounder, ST Express, and Tacoma Link. The AISAP intern will have an opportunity to be a part of the team that oversees our passenger access and Station Area Planning functions and learn how a large regional transit system is managed.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

JOB DUTIES:

  • Supports the successful implementation of a major transit expansion programs including Link, BRT, ST Express, Sounder, and Tacoma Link.
  • Supports improved understanding of passenger access to Sound Transit’s existing stations, including collecting data on pedestrian, bicycle, local transit, pick-up and drop-off, and parking modes of access.
  • Supports managing scheduling and planning portions of Sound Transit’s services and prepares service change packages describing all Sound Transit service and facility changes two times per year.
  • Supports structured coordination with stakeholders and partner agencies around passenger access, bus-rail integration planning, and Station Area Planning at and for light rail, BRT, commuter rail, and express bus service.
  • Supports the reviews, development and revision of multi-disciplinary policies, programs, and projects, as directed by the ST Board, to provide regional transit facilities and services.
  • Performs policy analysis, data collection and analysis, and conducts historical research.
  • Supports preparation of budget and cost analysis.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of strategies and supports coordination with other agencies to advance the Agency’s long-term opportunities to expand, enhance, and integrate the regional light rail, commuter rail, bus rapid transit (BRT), and express bus systems with local services and each other.

POTENTIAL PROJECTS:

  • Design and lead a passenger access data collection effort to better understand how passengers get to Sound Transit stations.
  • Analysis of existing and future light rail stations to better assess and document known and potential passenger access and Station Area Planning activities.
  • Analyze performance measures and regional transportation data to support AISAP program activities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Applicants must be a current college student in good academic standing, enrolled in an accredited associate, bachelor's or graduate degree program in Urban Planning, or other non-technical discipline or relevant two-year certificate.          

ADDITIONAL SKILLS:

  • GIS and other technical/software knowledge.
  • Data collection and analysis.
  • Strong collaboration skills.

  • Work is performed in a standard office environment.
