Description
Intern must be local to attend in-person cohort meetings, activities, and any work-related tasks. The program runs 6/10/2024 - 8/30/2024, but there is some flexibility with the start and end dates.
Position Summary
Why It's a Great Opportunity:
The Pierce County Summer internship program is back! Our program will run from 6/10/2024 through 8/30/2024. We are excited to offer opportunities that provide realistic and meaningful work experiences while providing Pierce County Departments, the Council, and Courts with interns who bring fresh perspectives and assistance to complete special projects. Interns also get an opportunity to be a part of a cohort of interns who will attend weekly activities together. These sessions include professional development classes, collaboration with other interns, and tours of various departments and facilities where you will learn about the County and the types of great job opportunities we offer. As a cohort, you will be responsible for a culminating group project/presentation to the Pierce County Council.

Surface Water Management is an award-winning division within the Planning and Public Works Department, recognized nationally for the work it does in floodplain management, habitat restoration, flood protection, and water quality. We are looking for an intern to assist in collecting and managing GIS data. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated with a keen attention to detail. You will apply their knowledge of GIS in field, office, and remote settings under the direction of highly knowledgeable technical staff.
You will have the opportunity to work directly with experts in an array of fields, including watershed modeling, GIS asset management, water quality, and stormwater management. You will gain valuable, hands-on experience with industry-standard GIS tools, while surrounded by experienced staff invested in growing this individual's technical proficiencies. You will see first-hand how stormwater and surface waters are managed at the local scale while gaining a deeper understanding of environmental policies and regulations.
Core Daily Responsibilities:
You will assist with planning and modeling staff in the collection and refinement of GIS data related to the County's stormwater conveyance system. There will be opportunities for field data collection and desktop GIS analysis. There may also be opportunities to assist with our ongoing watershed delineation work, basin prioritization to meet upcoming NPDES Municipal Stormwater Permit requirements, and innovative modeling work directed at improving water quality and alleviating flood risk.
- Assisting with field GIS data collection using mobile applications and equipment,
- Assisting with stormwater asset data validation, maintenance and updates,
- Assisting senior staff in delineating watershed boundaries using established methods,
- Analyzing GIS data using Esri ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online,
- Developing maps and GIS data visualizations to support water quality improvement planning.
How to be Successful in the Role:
We are looking for those with science, engineering, and technical writing skills as well as critical thinking and good communication. Someone who is a self-starter with the ability to work on their own and as part of the team.
Qualifications
  • Must be local 6/10/2024 - 8/30/2024 to attend in-person cohort meetings, activities, and any work-related tasks.
  • Education in environmental sciences, engineering, geography or GIS
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Proficiency with common GIS applications, including Esri ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online

  • Experience or familiarity with common types of stormwater infrastructure and/or basic principles of stormwater management

This is a competitive selection process. Your application will be reviewed and evaluated for the quality and quantity of education/experience in the areas listed. Applicants whose qualifications most closely correspond to the County's needs will be eligible for further consideration. Sick Leave
Extra hires are eligible to receive sick leave in accordance with the WA State Minimum Wage Act. Extra hires are not eligible for other County benefits.
Social Security
All Pierce County employees are covered by the federal Social Security and Medicare systems. The county and the employee pay an equal amount into the system.
Retirement and Deferred Compensation
Pro-tem Judges in District Court, Pro-tem Superior Court Commissioners, Extra Hires with Retirement, and Work Study Students with Retirement are eligible for Retirement and Deferred Compensation and Social Security.
Pierce County employees are members of the State of Washington's Department of Retirement System (DRS) and depending on the position or previous DRS enrollment may be able to enroll in one of many programs DRS offers. For additional information, check out the web site.
