About The Job
Dudek is seeking experienced candidates for a full-time, junior-level Transportation Planner or Engineer position to join our Environmental Technical Group’s (ETG) Transportation Team to support a broad range of client projects throughout California and elsewhere in the U.S. The candidate Dudek hires will work directly with a high-performing inter-office crew comprising junior, middle, and senior-level Transportation Planners and engineers, including multiple AICP, EIT, and PE members that serve many clients and their transportation, renewable energy, transmission, commercial and industrial development, environmental, and construction-related projects. The position would require fitness for duty to conduct outdoor field work and associated physical demands; and, some travel to and from client project sites will be required. Dudek office locations for this position include Encinitas, San Diego (Liberty Station), Santa Barbara, Oakland, and Sacramento.

Duties and Responsibilities (may include some or all of the below): 
  • Report to Dudek’s ETG – Transportation Team’s supervisor and work cooperatively with the Transportation Team members and other Dudek staff.
  • Report to a physical Dudek office at least twice per week to receive direction and training; interact with staff from other Dudek technical specialties.
  • Attend virtual and in-person meetings, as needed.
  • Conduct traffic operations analyses (e.g., level of service – LOS, circulation, queuing analyses, etc.).
  • Conduct vehicle miles traveled (VMT) analyses.
  • Prepare traffic engineering design plans such as: signing and striping plans, sight distance analysis, traffic control plans, etc.
  • Report writing and preparation of graphics/figures.
  • Travel to/from project sites to conduct investigative field work.
Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in urban planning, civil engineering, environmental sciences, or related technical disciplines.
  • 1 to 3 years of related job experience; Master’s degree may substitute for related job experience.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and have active personal automobile liability insurance by first day of employment.
* As a federal contractor, successful candidates are required to pass the following pre-employment requirements prior to beginning employment: pre - employment drug test and background check.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Understanding of traffic operations in terms of LOS, vehicular delay, and roadway capacity; traffic simulation; VMT; and, general principles of traffic operations such as the Highway Capacity Manual (HCM) methodologies.
  • Understanding of basic traffic engineering design and analysis including sight distance analysis; conceptual signing and striping plans; and, site circulation (turn radius analysis).
  • Experience with transportation analysis software such as: Highway Capacity Software (HCS), Synchro/SimTraffic, Vistro/VISSIM, SIDRA, etc.
  • Experience with other industry software such as: Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.), GIS, AutoCAD, and Illustrator for use in transportation analyses and report preparation.
  • Technical report and memoranda writing.
  • Experience with transportation impact or adverse effect assessment vis-à-vis federal (NEPA), state (CEQA), or local standards (General Plan Circulation Elements and Transportation Analysis Guidelines).
Physical Requirements
Working Conditions:
  • This job operates in a remote or office-based environment and this role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, printers, etc.
  • This job requires occasional project site visits-based outdoors which can include excessive noise, uneven walking surfaces, extreme weather, moving vehicles and equipment.
Physical Requirements: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met in order to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.
  • This job requires working on a computer, sitting, or standing for long periods of time in an office or remote office setting.
  • This job requires attending meetings, both in person and virtually as well as speaking on the phone with peers, clients, etc. Speaking, hearing, and listening are required.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Outdoor activity may involve walking/trekking in uneven terrain over long distances in extreme weather conditions for extended periods of time.

Proposed Salary Range: $55,000 - $70,000 per year*
*Final agreed upon compensation will be based on a variety of factors including but not limited to an individual’s related experience, education, certifications, skills, and work location.
