Job description

Performs routine semi-skilled work in servicing transit motorized equipment; does related work as required. Work is performed under the immediate supervision of the Lead Transit Equipment Service Attendant and the regular supervision of the Transit Maintenance Supervisor.

  • Inspects vehicle interior and exterior for cleanliness and condition.
  • Fuels, lubricates, and checks all fluid levels; adds fluids as needed.
  • Washes and cleans equipment and vehicle interiors and exteriors; checks tire wear; changes, repairs, and replaces tires as needed; records mileage and fuel, oil, and fluids consumption.
  • Steam cleans engines and washes equipment parts; Checks lights, wipers, signals, etc. for proper operation; Assists mechanics with repair and maintenance duties as needed.
  • Picks up parts and supplies from vendor or warehouse.
  • Cleans office area, shop area and tools, and performs building and grounds maintenance.
  • Assists in installation of bus stop signs, benches, and shelters.
  • Assists in maintenance, cleaning, and cutting grass around bus stop signs, benches, and shelters.
  • Actively participates in the transit system's agency safety plan.
  • Ensures that all work is performed in accordance with OSHA and City Safety Standards and Policies
  • Must read, write, and speak the English language.
  • Must have a high school diploma OR General Equivalency Diploma (GED)
  • Must have a valid North Carolina Driver's License
  • Must be able to safely lift a minimum of 50 lbs. and able to maneuver up to 150 lbs. when using hoist, hand truck, dollies, or winches.
  • Must have ability to keep records of mileage and fluids consumption.
  • Must be able to work with all types of people.
  • Must be able to work evenings, weekends, and early morning shifts on a regularly scheduled basis.
Physical Requirements
Hearing/Speaking - Must be able to speak so others can hear when worker is out of their view, i.e., worker may be inside or under a vehicle, need assistance and call out to another employee. Must be able to hear others when they are out of worker's view. Worker often uses the two-way radio.
Visual Abilities - the ability to perceive via eyesight is required for this position:
  • Acuity, far - Clarity of vision at 20 feet or more. Must be able to see vehicles moving in surrounding area. Both eyes 20/25 - R 20/30 - L 20/30 corrected.
  • Acuity, near - Clarity of vision at 20 inches or less. Must be able to see work aids close at hand so as to choose the correct tool and then work with it. Both eyes 20/22 corrected.
  • Depth perception - Three-dimensional vision and the ability to judge distance and space relationships so as to see objects where and as they actually are. Depth Perception - 4.
  • Field of Vision - the area that can be seen up and down or to the right or left while eyes are focused on one point. Must be able to see a wide span of area to detect moving vehicle when working in vicinity.
  • Accommodation - Must be able to adjust the eye lens to glance quickly. This item is especially important when doing near-point work at varying distances from eye. Must be able to glance quickly from close work to distant object or vehicle and have eye lens adjust readily.
  • Color Vision - Ability to identify and distinguish colors. To be able to distinguish colors is beneficial but not necessary.

Physical Strength - degree of physical demands typically associated with this position include:
  • Heavy Work
    • Exerting up to 200 pounds of force frequently when moving and lifting tires; and/or
    • Exerting up to 30 pounds of force frequently when lifting orders and supplies; and
    • A negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements include lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling heavy items, and walking, standing, climbing, crawling, reaching, bending, and stooping. The use of arms, hands, legs, and feet is significant.
  • Type of Physical Demands
    • Reaching - Extending the hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.
    • Handling - Seizing, holding, grasping, turning, or otherwise working with hand(s).
    • Fingering - Picking, pinching or otherwise working with fingers primarily rather than the entire hand or arm.
    • All listed demands are common to this job.

Reasoning
  • Ability to apply principles of logical thinking to work tasks and practical situations and requests made by supervisor; to comprehend and respond to a variety of tasks in an expedient manner. Good judgment is important.
Mathematics Ability
  • Using Arithmetic: Ability to use arithmetic to the extent of measuring and adding fluids to equipment, documenting mileage, and fluid consumption, and counting parts and supplies upon receipt.
Language Ability
  • Read: Ability to read instructions, directions, report and/or documentation information, order forms and other documents relating to the job.
  • Write: Ability to write figures and make mileage and consumption reports.
  • Speak: Ability to be conversant in voice and diction so as to participate in discussions with other employees and supervisor.
Environmental Conditions
Physical Surroundings
  • The Worker is subject to Outside Environmental Conditions: Exposed to the various weather conditions and temperatures. Employee cleans, washes, checks fluids, and changes tires outside the main shop. The employee is subject to all weather conditions including very hot and extremely cold, rain, wind, and ice. The position is best suited for someone who doesn't mind getting wet, dirty, cold, hot, and sweaty.
Hazards
  • Employee will be exposed to trash, garbage, grass, petroleum products, hazardous materials and chemicals associated with a transit maintenance facility. Work is subject to final standards of OSHA on bloodborne pathogens.
Machinery/Tools/Work Aids/Other Equipment
  • Service truck, buses, compressors, fuel pumps, various hoses, lawn mower, cleaning products and appropriate aids, Personnel Resolution, ladders, tires, lights, wipers, bus stop signs, benches, shelters, hand tools, gas, oil, and other fluids and equipment commonly used in a transit maintenance facility.
