Description
The City of La Quinta is excited to announce an opening for a Traffic Signal Technician in the Public Works/Engineering Department.
The Traffic Signal Technician position is right for you if you:

The Traffic Signal Technician performs skilled maintenance, repair, and specialized technical services on TRAFFIC SIGNALs which may include providing guidance and technical knowledge to other staff and ensuring proper procedures and quality service.
Example of Duties
  • Develops schedules and collects data for traffic related projects and studies.
  • Inputs and scans data into computer systems; records and logs information; generates reports; maintains related documentation.
  • Inspects, diagnoses, modifies, installs, and repairs TRAFFIC SIGNALs, timing, battery backup, lighting systems, conduits, poles, signal heads, controllers, switches, video cameras, vehicle detectors, and wired and wireless communication facilities.
  • Operates vehicles and equipment, including bucket trucks, boom lifts, arrow board trucks, and other related equipment.
  • Orders materials and parts for projects and maintains inventory, researches vendors and products for pricing and quality.
  • Provides input to traffic control plans and ensures compliance with standards and regulations; installs street barricades, traffic cones, and signage for lane closures; controls traffic around work sites to ensure safe conditions for the public and City staff.
  • Repairs and maintains in-pavement flashing light systems for crosswalks, flashing beacons, and driver speed feedback signs.
  • Responds to citizen inquiries, requests, and complaints, including TRAFFIC SIGNAL emergencies.
  • Tests and certifies traffic malfunction monitor units.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience
High School Diploma or GED and four (4) years' of related experience related to area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the job's essential duties.
Licensing/Certifications
  • CPR/First Aid Certification within ninety (90) days of employment.
  • Valid Class "C" California driver's license.

  • Comprehending and correctly interpreting a variety of technical documents.
  • Maintaining accurate records.
  • Maintaining effective working relationships with peers, public, and staff.
  • Operating a computer and relevant software applications.
  • Operating applicable tools, equipment, and testing devices.
  • Operating modern office equipment.
  • Performing basic math computations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  • Providing customer service.
  • Researching and procuring supplies and equipment.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Must be able to work flexible hours, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Incumbents in this position work in indoor and outdoor environments and experience exposure to heat, cold, noise, wind, dust, and other extreme weather conditions; exposure to mechanical, chemical, electrical, and respiratory hazards; work on slippery or uneven surfaces; and moderate to loud noise levels.
Position typically requires standing, sitting, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling, reaching, handling, fine dexterity, kneeling, crouching, crawling, bending, twisting, climbing, vision, hearing, talking, and foot controls.
Very Heavy: Exerting over 100 lbs. occasionally, 50-100 lbs. frequently, or up to 20-50 lbs. constantly.
IMPORTANT NOTICE
The City of La Quinta employees are registered as Emergency Disaster Workers and must take an oath. In the event of a declared emergency, City employees shall initially remain at work or, if recalled, shall report to work after completing critical personal and family emergency responsibilities.
SELECTION PROCESS

  • Retirement: 2% at 62 formula for new CalPERS members and an employee pre-tax contribution of 6.25%; 2% at 60 formula for existing or "Classic" CalPERS members with an employee pre-tax contribution of 7%
